Activity Title: Re-enacting the End of the Western Roman Empire: A Theatrical Approach

Project Objective

The goal of this project is for students to develop an understanding of the factors that led to the fall of the Western Roman Empire by researching, writing, and performing a short play. This unique approach to the content seeks to enhance both content knowledge – including an understanding of historical and socio-emotional issues – and skills such as communication, creativity, and time management.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be placed in groups of 3-5 and tasked with writing and performing a short play that illustrates the factors that contributed to the end of the Western Roman Empire, with a particular focus on the barbarian invasions and the rise of Christianity.

Required Materials

• Textbooks and online resources for research
• Paper and pens or computers for writing the script
• Props for the play (at the students’ discretion)
• Recording equipment (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions for Implementing the Activity

1. Divide the class into groups of 3-5 students.
2. Have each group research the factors that contributed to the fall of the Western Roman Empire, with a focus on the barbarian invasions and the rise of Christianity.
3. From their research, students should create a script for a play that will creatively and engagingly portray the factors that led to the fall of the Western Roman Empire.
4. Have the groups perform their plays for the class. If possible, record the performances.
5. Have the groups submit a written report on their project.

Project Deliverables

Upon completion of the project, each group must submit:

1. A script of their play: The script should include character and scene descriptions, as well as dialogue. It should be clear enough that someone could read it and understand the story and action.
2. A performance of their play (optional recording): The play can be performed live for the class or recorded and submitted as a video to the teacher.
3. A written report: This paper should explain their artistic choices based on their research on the topic and should be structured as follows:

   • Body: Here, students should explain the theory behind the play’s central themes, describe the process they took in detail, explain the methodology they used, and discuss the results they obtained.
   • Conclusion: Students should conclude the paper by restating their main points and explaining what they learned and concluded from the project.
   • Bibliography: Finally, students should include the sources they consulted to complete the project.

This activity is designed to get students deeply engaged in the content and to use creativity and teamwork to create an educational and enjoyable play about the fall of the Western Roman Empire.
