Context
Ancient Greece: Pre-Hellenism
Ancient Greece is a civilization that emerged in the southern Balkan Peninsula around 2000 BC and extended until the beginning of the Middle Ages, specifically in 476 AD. It is a fundamental stage to understand how our current society was built, as the Greeks were pioneers in many cultural, political, and scientific aspects that still influence us today.
During this project, we will delve into the Pre-Homeric period to the Pre-Hellenistic Period (2000 BC - 300 BC). This time encompasses the formation of City-States, the creation of Democracy, the Persian Wars, and other fundamental events for world history.
The Importance of Ancient Greece
Ancient Greece was the birthplace of inventions and ideas that remain with us to this day. It was the Greeks who invented democracy, a political system that favors popular participation and is adopted by many countries. In addition, philosophy, which began with the pre-Socratic philosophers, helped shape the way we think and see the world.
Understanding Ancient Greece, its customs, politics, and philosophy, is essential to understand how many of the institutions, practices, and ideas that are dear to us today emerged and developed.
Activity
Activity Title: "Recreating Ancient Greece: Pre-Hellenism"
Project Objective
The objective of this project is for groups of students to immerse themselves in the culture and history of Ancient Greece, specifically in the Pre-Hellenistic period, and produce a model representing a Greek City-State, along with an oral presentation on the history, characteristics, and importance of this City-State.
Detailed Project Description
Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5, and each group must choose a City-State (for example, Athens, Sparta, Corinth) to be the focus of their research and model.
First, students should research the chosen City-State, its political system, way of life, main conflicts, its importance in Ancient Greece, and how this city influences the modern world. In addition to historical research, students must study the geography and architecture of the time for the model's creation.
Next, students will build a model representing the chosen City-State, taking into account the main architectural and geographical aspects of the city.
Finally, each group must create an oral presentation, based on their research, explaining the choice of elements represented in the model and their importance for understanding the history of the city and Pre-Hellenistic Greece.
Required Materials
- Research materials: books, internet access, etc.
- Materials for model construction: cardboard, paper, glue, paint, clay, and other necessary materials.
