European Maritime Expansion: Mercantilism

Contextualization

The Great Navigations, also known as the European maritime expansion, were a defining moment in global history. This movement, which took place mainly between the 15th and 16th centuries, was led by European nations such as Portugal, Spain, England, and France. These nations sought new trade routes, to expand their territorial borders, and to spread Christianity.

The development of new navigation technologies and more accurate maps were the main facilitators for this movement of exploration. In addition, maritime expansion was also a reflection of the great political, economic, and cultural transformations that Europe underwent during the transition from feudalism to modern capitalism.

This period was marked by the discovery of new territories, the encounter of different cultures, and also by conflicts. European explorers encountered peoples and cultures completely different from those to which they were accustomed, and the contacts between Europeans and native peoples of other regions of the world often resulted in conflicts and subsequent colonization of the discovered territories.

Importance of the Theme

This project will allow students to understand the motivations, the political, economic, technological, and cultural factors that contributed to the European maritime expansion, as well as the consequences of this movement for the formation of the world as we know it.

Through the understanding of this complex and significant historical process, students will be able to reflect on the impacts of European expansion on the colonized territories, on international relations, on trade flows, and on global cultural construction.

We suggest the following resources for further study and as a basis for debates:

  1. Book: The European Maritime Expansion (1450-1800) - R. R. Palmer, Joel Colton, and Lloyd Kramer
  2. Documentary: Great Navigations - The Construction of the Modern World
  3. Encyclopedia Britannica page: Age of Discovery

Practical Activity

Title: "The Journey of Navigations: A Virtual Expedition"

Project Objective

To stimulate historical, geographical, and cultural reasoning through the simulation of the journey of the great European navigations, with the aim of promoting understanding of the processes, impacts, and consequences of this phenomenon in the formation of the modern world.

Detailed Description of the Project

Students, organized into groups of 3 to 5 people, will have to carry out an intense research on the Great Navigations, focusing on aspects such as: routes, technologies, objectives, challenges, impacts on Europe and the "discovered" territories, cultural specificities of the regions encountered, conflicts, and interactions between Europeans and native peoples.

With the material collected, each group must create an interactive presentation that simulates one of the voyages that marked this era. The presentation should include theoretical information, visual representations (maps, images of ships, etc.), possible scenarios of encounters and cultural conflicts, and also reflections on the impacts of these voyages on the formation of the contemporary world.

The activity is interdisciplinary, involving mainly the disciplines of History and Geography, but also Languages (for the development of the presentation) and Arts (for the creation of visual elements).

Materials Required

  • Books and digital materials for research
  • Online presentation tool (such as Prezi, Google Slides, or similar)
  • Image editing software (optional)

Step by Step

  1. Definition of groups and choice of the voyage/ship to be portrayed.
  2. Research on the historical context, routes, objectives, challenges, and impacts of the chosen voyage.
  3. Collection and analysis of data and information about the people or peoples encountered on the voyage.
  4. Creation of the interactive presentation.
  5. Revision and final adjustments to the presentation.
  6. Project presentation to the class and discussion of the topics covered.

Project Deliverables

The group must deliver:

  1. The interactive presentation, which will be evaluated according to its adequacy to the theme, depth and clarity of the information presented, creativity, and technical quality.
  2. A detailed written report on the project.

The report must include:

  • Introduction: Contextualization of the Great Navigations and of the chosen voyage, justification of the choice, objectives of the work, relevance, and application in the real world.
  • Development: Explanation of the research methodology, detailed description of the chosen voyage (including routes, challenges, cultural interactions, etc.), presentation, and discussion of the results obtained (including reflections on the impacts of the voyage on Europe and the "discovered" territories).
  • Conclusion: Summary of the main points, explanation of the lessons learned, and conclusions drawn about the project.
  • Bibliography: Sources consulted for the project.
  1. Class presentation: This should include a brief description of the work done and a demonstration of the interactive presentation.

The group must be prepared to answer questions and discuss the topics covered during the presentation. The quality of the discussion and the ability to answer questions in a coherent and well-founded way will be part of the evaluation of the project.
