Contextualization
The Renaissance, a period that extended from the 14th to the 16th centuries, was a time of intense social, artistic, political, and scientific transformations in Europe. The term 'renaissance' comes from the Latin 'renascere' and means 'to be born again', referring to the idea of renewing ancient wisdom, inspired mainly by Greco-Roman culture. It was a time when individuals began to prioritize human experience and individual achievements, contrasting with the divine focus of the Middle Ages.
Various aspects of European society were profoundly altered: the feudal structure gave way to the beginning of national monarchies, the church lost some of its control over knowledge, and new ways of seeing the world and man emerged, marking the beginning of modernity. The Renaissance was the cradle of many concepts and ideas that continue to shape our world today.
Project Introduction
In this project, you will explore in detail two fundamental aspects of the Renaissance: 1) Advances in science and technology that helped shape the modern world, such as the scientific method, astronomical discoveries, and innovations in arts and architecture; and 2) The main thinkers of the Renaissance, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Nicolaus Copernicus, Galileo Galilei, Michelangelo, among others, seeking to understand their contributions and the impact of their ideas on society at that time.
Delving into these themes will allow you to better understand the importance of the Renaissance in shaping current Western culture and in building many concepts present in modern society.
The recommendation is to use the following research sources, but you are not limited to them:
-
General History and Brazil: From the Renaissance to the 21st Century - Book by historian Cláudio Vicentino that offers a comprehensive view on the subject.
-
Art History: Renaissance - Documentary available on YouTube that addresses the influence of the Renaissance on Art.
-
World Digital Library - Renaissance - Online platform that provides thousands of materials on the Renaissance for free.
Practical Activity
Activity Title: 'Unveiling the Renaissance: Science, Art, and Thought'
Project Objective:
The objective is to deepen the understanding of the relevance of the Renaissance in human history. Students should research, interpret, and present information on scientific discoveries, technological advances, main intellectuals, and their correlation with the arts during the Renaissance period.
Detailed Project Description:
Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5, will be responsible for creating a 'Virtual Renaissance Museum', using digital tools such as Google Slides, Padlet, or Prezi.
The museum should be divided into two main sections:
-
Advances in Science and Technology in the Renaissance: Students must research and present the main scientific and technological advances of the period, explaining how these discoveries contributed to the evolution of society and the formation of the modern world.
-
Thinkers and Artists of the Renaissance: Students must choose at least three intellectuals representative of this period and present in detail their main contributions, the impact of their ideas on society at that time, and the existing correlation between their works and scientific and technological advances.
Each section should include relevant images, detailed descriptions, and references.
Required Materials:
- Device with internet access (computer, tablet, or smartphone).
- Online presentation tool (Google Slides, Padlet, or Prezi, for example).
- Research material (books, videos, web pages)
Step by Step:
- Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
- Divide the research tasks, content development, and presentation assembly among group members.
- Each group should choose a digital platform to create their Virtual Renaissance Museum and start structuring the sections.
- Conduct research and gather information, images, and references for the museum's construction.
- Assemble the presentation, ensuring that the information is clear, concise, and engaging.
- Review the work and make final adjustments.
- Present the 'Virtual Renaissance Museum' to the class.
Project Deliverables:
At the end of the project, each group must deliver:
-
Virtual Renaissance Museum: Should contain all researched and compiled information by the students, organized in an visually appealing manner.
-
Project Report: Should be written following these topics:
- Introduction: Contextualizing the Renaissance theme, explaining its importance and the purpose of this project.
- Development: Explaining the methodology used in the research and assembly of the 'Virtual Renaissance Museum', also presenting the most relevant information found and discussing its results.
- Conclusion: Summarizing the main points of the project, explaining the learnings obtained, and drawing conclusions about the Renaissance.
- Bibliography: Listing all sources used for the project.
