Mathematics is everywhere, often in forms that we don't even realize in our daily lives. In construction, physics, economics, and even in calculating GPS routes. Today we are going to talk about a fundamental element of mathematics: quadratic equations. But not only that, we will delve into the understanding of an essential part of this type of equation, the coefficients.

Quadratic equations are mathematical expressions formed by terms of degree 2. They are named this way because the highest exponent of the unknown (x) is 2. The quadratic equation comes in the general form: ax²+bx+c=0, where a, b, and c are the coefficients and 'a' needs to be different from zero. Otherwise, the equation will not have its squared term and will become a first-degree equation.

The coefficients a, b, and c play a crucial role in the equation, as they define the shape of the parabola when the equation is represented on a graph. Moreover, they are the key to calculating the roots of the equation, values for which the equation becomes true. This is done through the Bhaskara formulas or Sum and Product. This importance of coefficients leads us, therefore, to a more in-depth study about them, their properties, and applications.

Importance

Understanding the role of coefficients in a quadratic equation is important in a variety of careers and fields of knowledge. Civil engineers, for example, use this to calculate trajectories of moving objects. Economists use quadratic equations to model and predict economic trends. Even in medicine, quadratic equations are used in radiology and dosage of medications, among other uses.

Understanding the importance of coefficients and how they affect the behavior of the equation is what allows these professionals to apply them properly in their respective fields. Furthermore, understanding this allows us to comprehend how mathematics affects the world around us and gives us the tools to make predictions and informed decisions.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Coefficients in Action: Unveiling the Quadratic Equation

Project Objective

Our goal is for you, in groups of 3 to 5 students, to explore in a playful and practical way the importance of coefficients in the formation and solution of equations. You will create a small theater using characters representing the coefficients (a, b, and c) and their interactions in the equation.

Detailed Project Description

Each divided group should elaborate and present a theatrical piece with a duration of approximately 20 minutes. The characters of the play must be the coefficients 'a', 'b', and 'c' of a quadratic equation. The groups should use scenarios and visual resources to make the presentation clearer.

In addition to the comic characterization of the characters, the drama plot should focus on the composition of a quadratic equation and its resolution, highlighting the importance of each coefficient in the parabola and in the determination of the roots.

Finally, each group should solve a specific quadratic equation as part of the show's plot, demonstrating the resolution steps and the importance of each coefficient in obtaining the answer.

Necessary Materials

  1. Paper and pen to write the script and dialogues.
  2. Clothing and props for characterizing the characters.
  3. Painting material and cardboard to create posters, graphics, or scenarios (optional).
  4. Smartphone or camera for recording the play.
  5. Calculators.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Carrying Out the Activity

  1. Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Each group must choose a quadratic equation to be the centerpiece of its play's plot.
  3. Write the play's script, focusing on the interaction of the coefficients and the equation's resolution.
  4. Gather or create the necessary costumes and props.
  5. Rehearse the play, paying attention to the clarity of the mathematical information being conveyed.
  6. Record the play's presentation.
  7. Watch the recording and make any necessary adjustments.
  8. Submit the final recording for evaluation.
  9. Each group must write a report on the project, the learning acquired during the process, and the resolution of the play's central equation.

Project Deliverables

After the theatrical rehearsal and video recording, each group must write a report containing:

  1. Introduction: presentation and contextualization of the chosen quadratic equation, its relevance, and justification for the choice.

  2. Development: detailed explanation of the process, from script preparation to play recording. It is important to detail how the theory of coefficients was incorporated into the narrative and how the equation was solved.

  3. Conclusions: your group should present which skills were developed, the challenges faced, how they were overcome, and what they learned about the coefficients of quadratic equations.

  4. Bibliography used: accurately indicate the resources the group used to inform themselves and support the play's elaboration.

The groups will have one week to carry out the activity and submit the video of the performance and the final report.
