"Power Game: The Math of the Magic Cube"

Project Goals

The objective of this project is to develop and implement a “Power Game” using a Magic Cube. Through this game, students will work on the theoretical concepts of exponents in a practical and engaging way. Besides that, students will work as a team, developing socioemotional skills.

Detailed Project Description

Each group of 3-5 students will receive a 3x3x3 Magic Cube. Every color of the cube will represent a base number from 1 to 6. The moves in the cube will represent the operations with exponents.

Students should create a list of rules for the game in which each move in the cube corresponds to a specific power calculation, based on rules that must be followed. With each move, they should calculate the corresponding power and record the results.

After a set number of moves (to be defined by the students), they must calculate the final result and compare it with the results of the other groups. The group that obtains the highest number wins.

Required Materials

  • 3x3x3 Magic Cube for each group.
  • Pens and sheets of paper to write down the calculations and rules of the game.
  • Calculator, if necessary.

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. The students should gather in groups of 3 to 5 people.
  2. Each group receives a 3x3x3 Magic Cube.
  3. The students study and debate the rules for the game focusing on the use of exponents.
  4. The students write down the rules they created and start the game.
  5. With each move in the cube, students write down the exponent calculation and the result.
  6. After a predetermined number of moves, the students add up all the results of the calculations.
