Contextualization

The topic "Function - Domain" is a fundamental part of Mathematics. It serves as a foundation for understanding different concepts in Mathematics and Physics, as well as being crucial in areas such as Engineering, Economics, Computer Science, among others.

The domain of a function is nothing more than the set of possible inputs of a function, that is, the values that we can input into the function so that it has a defined output value. That is, given a function f(x), the domain consists of all the values of x that make the function meaningful.

For example, if we have the function f(x) = 1/x, where we should know that we cannot divide by zero, therefore, 0 does not belong to the domain of this function. In other words, the Domain is the "rule" that determines which numbers enter a given mathematical problem.

Introduction

Functions are a way to describe mathematical relationships between two things. In this case, the relationship between the input (x) and the output (f(x)) of a given function. Functions help model and solve a wide range of real-world problems. For example, they can be used to model growth rates (such as the growth rate of a population of bacteria), describe the trajectory of an object thrown into the air, calculate compound interest, among many other examples.

The domain of a function is an essential concept to properly understand how to work with functions. It is a tool that allows us to define the limits within which a function is valid. By understanding the domain of a function, we have a clear idea of where the function "works" and where it "does not work", allowing for a more precise analysis and avoiding conceptual errors.

Practical Activity: Exploring the Domain of Real Functions

Project Objective

In this project, students will:

  • Identify what a function is and conceptualize the domain of a function.
  • Find the domain of different real functions.
  • Correlate the subject to everyday life, showing the applicability of the concept.

Project Description

Groups will be composed of 3 to 5 students and will have the task of exploring the world of real functions and their domains. The project will be divided into three stages: theoretical research, exercise resolution, and practical application. Each group should select two real functions of their choice to work on in the activity.

Necessary Materials

  • Notebook or sheets of paper for notes.
  • Pencil, pen, and eraser.
  • Textbooks or internet access for research.
  • Calculator.

Step by Step

  1. Theoretical Research: Students will investigate real functions and the definition of the domain. Each group member should contribute a part of the research and discuss their findings with the group.

  2. Exercise Resolution: After the research stage, students should choose two real functions to work on. They should explain the definition of the chosen functions and calculate the domain of each one.

  3. Practical Application: Students should identify real-life situations where the selected functions could be applied. They should explain the problem, how the function helps solve it, and what restrictions the function's domain imposes on the situation.

  4. Report Writing: Students must produce a report containing all the information collected and generated during the project. They should structure it following the four main topics mentioned earlier: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography. In the Introduction, it is expected to contextualize the theme, its relevance, and the project's objectives. In the Development, the selected functions, the definition of the domain of each one, and the practical application are discussed. The Conclusions should summarize the main points and explain the learnings obtained from the project. In the Bibliography, the research sources used should be listed.

The total duration for the project execution will be one month. On average, each participating student should spend between five and ten hours to complete it.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, each group must deliver:

  1. Written Report: Its structure should follow the proposed outline, with all sections duly filled out. Additionally, it should contain the resolution of the exercises and the description of the practical application of the functions.

  2. Project Presentation: Each group will make an oral presentation to the class, summarizing the main points of their work and sharing their findings and experiences. This will help develop communication and teamwork skills among students.
