These two parallel sides are known as bases, and the line segment perpendicular to these bases is called the height. The formula to calculate the area of a trapezoid is given by (Greater Base + Smaller Base) * Height / 2.

Algebra is a fundamental part of mathematics, where symbolic representation is used to solve problems and equations. Within this context, it is essential to find the area of a trapezoid.

A fundamental area of mathematics related to this topic is geometry. Geometry is the area of knowledge that focuses on properties and relationships of points, lines, angles, surfaces, and solids. In our case, the area of a trapezoid.

For example, imagine a farmer who wants to measure the size of a field that has the shape of a trapezoid. Project Objective

The objective of this activity is to lead students to explore the area of a trapezoid through a practical approach, building trapezoid models and applying mathematical and geometric concepts to calculate their area.

Detailed Project Description

This project combines mathematics with civil engineering, as students will design, build, and calculate the area of trapezoid models. This activity involves teamwork, communication, and the application of mathematics in practical situations.

The project's duration should be approximately two full weeks. It is recommended that students work in groups of 3 to 5 to maximize collaboration and task division.

Required Materials

  • Cardboard, cardboard, or any type of sturdy material that can be used for building trapezoid models.
  • Ruler.
  • Pencils, pens.
  • Scissors.
  • A4 paper, for the final report.
  • Computers with internet access, for research.

Detailed Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity

  1. Preliminary Research: Students should start the project with in-depth research on trapezoids, their definition, types, and the formula to calculate their area. Students should use the sources suggested in the introduction, as well as look for other sources if necessary.

  2. Design and Planning of Models: Next, student groups should design and draw the models of their trapezoids. Each group should design at least three different types of trapezoids, using different base and height measurements.

  3. Building the Models: Students should use the suggested materials to assemble the models of their trapezoids, following the drawings and plans made earlier.

  4. Calculating the Area of the Trapezoids: After construction, each group should measure the bases and height of their models and calculate their area using the formula for trapezoid area calculation.

  5. Final Report: Finally, each group should produce a final report, which will be the main deliverable of the project.
