Angles are a crucial part of geometry, helping to describe shapes and patterns. One of the types of angles that we study is the inscribed angle that is not central, which is one whose vertex does not coincide with the center of the circumference and is inside it. For example, when we look at an analog clock, the hour and minute hands form inscribed angles that are not central.

Project aim

The aim of this project is for students to use the concept of inscribed angles that are not central to measure the height of objects, applying theory to practice and developing measurement, calculation and teamwork skills.

Project description

Groups of 3 to 5 students will choose an object of unknown height in their surroundings (a tree, a building, a lamppost, etc.). The students will then use the concept of inscribed angles that are not central to calculate the height of this object.

Materials needed

  1. Tape measure or measuring tape.
  2. Plumb line / plumb bob.
  3. An object of known height (which will be used to create an inscribed angle that is not central).
  4. Pencil and paper for notes and calculations.
  5. Calculator.

Step by step

  1. Students should first choose an object of unknown height to measure. This object should be in a location that allows observation from a safe distance.
  2. Next, choose an object of known height. This object should be placed so that, looking from the object of known height to the object of unknown height, an inscribed angle that is not central is formed.
  3. Next, measure the distance between the observer and the object of known height and note down this value.
  4. Students should then use the ratio determined by the inscribed angle that is not central and the measurements taken to calculate the height of the unknown object.

Project deliverables

At the end of the hands-on activity, students should produce a written report covering the following topics:

  • Introduction: Describe the project, the concept of inscribed angles that are not central and their relevance to the world. The aim of the project should also be explained.
