Triangles: Pythagoras

Contextualization

The Pythagorean theorem is one of the oldest and most important mathematical foundations. It was demonstrated and used by Pythagoras, a mathematician and philosopher from Ancient Greece. The theorem establishes that in a right triangle - one that has a 90-degree angle - the sum of the squares of the lengths of the legs is equal to the square of the length of the hypotenuse. This concept is so prevalent and useful that it is taught in schools worldwide, and it has been refined and expanded by mathematicians and philosophers throughout history.

The theorem itself is a simple explanation, but its proof and applications are much more complex. Fully understanding it requires a solid grasp of geometry, algebra, and calculus. Furthermore, to truly appreciate its beauty and elegance, you need to understand the logic and reasoning underlying abstract mathematics.

The application of the theorem is seen in various areas, from physics to engineering, architecture, computer graphics, navigation, among others. It is this intersection between theory and practical application that makes the Pythagorean theorem such a powerful and fascinating tool.

Introduction

The story of Pythagoras and his theorem is a perfect example of how mathematics and philosophy are interconnected. Pythagoras was a philosopher who believed that everything in the universe could be explained by numbers and their relationships. He and his followers, the Pythagoreans, made numerous discoveries in mathematics, music, astronomy, and philosophy.

The Pythagorean theorem is perhaps his most well-known contribution, but his impact on mathematics goes far beyond that. He and his followers were responsible for some of the earliest known mathematical proofs, and their work initiated a tradition of abstract thinking that underpins all modern mathematics.

It is also important to note that Pythagoras was not alone in his work. As a philosopher, he was part of a tradition of thought that included many other great mathematicians and philosophers from Ancient Greece. Studying the Pythagorean theorem is, therefore, a gateway to understanding this rich intellectual history.

Practical Activity: "Pythagoras in Practice: Construction of Right Triangles and Applications of the Theorem"

Activity Title

"Pythagoras in Practice: Construction of Right Triangles and Applications of the Theorem"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to apply the Pythagorean theorem in solving practical problems and constructing geometric figures, promoting an understanding of the concepts and principles that govern this theorem.

Detailed Project Description

The project will be developed in groups of 3 to 5 students, with a one-month deadline for completion. This project involves theoretical and practical aspects that address the Pythagorean theorem, allowing students to experience and experiment with this important mathematical theory.

The project will be divided into three main parts:

  1. Theoretical study: students will conduct an in-depth study of the theorem, its history, its applications, and its importance, using free and accessible resources on the internet.

  2. Construction of right triangles: students will create models of right triangles using simple materials such as popsicle sticks and sewing threads, thus allowing a clear visualization of the relationship between the sides of a right triangle.

  3. Practical application: students will solve practical problems that require the application of the Pythagorean theorem. They will also write a detailed report on the application and relevance of the theorem in the real world.

Required Materials

  • Books and/or online resources for research;
  • Popsicle sticks or wooden sticks;
  • Sewing thread;
  • Glue;
  • Cardboard;
  • Ruler and markers.

Step-by-Step

  1. Conduct an in-depth research on the Pythagorean theorem: its history, applications, relevance, and implications. Group discussions and brief presentations can be held to facilitate understanding.

  2. Build models of right triangles. Glue three popsicle sticks or wooden sticks on the cardboard to form a right triangle. Create a sewing thread that represents the hypotenuse, and two others that represent the legs. The relationship between the lengths of these threads will be a concrete illustration of the Pythagorean theorem.

  3. Identify practical problems that require the application of the Pythagorean theorem. It could be the distance between two points in the school, the height of a building, etc. Solve the problem using the theorem and compare your results with those obtained using alternative methods.

  4. Write a detailed report that includes: an introduction contextualizing the Pythagorean theorem and the group work, a discussion of the theory and applications of the theorem, a careful explanation of the model construction and the solution to the practical problem, and a conclusion summarizing the main learnings. Also include the bibliography used.

Project Conclusion and Deliverables

At the end of the project, students must submit a written report documenting the entire project process, from the initial research to the conclusion. The reports should be formatted clearly and accurately, highlighting the following topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

  • Introduction: Contextualize the theme, its relevance and application in the real world as well as the objective of this project.

  • Development: Explain the theory behind the central theme of the project, detail the activity, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained.

  • Conclusions: Conclude the work by summarizing its main points, explaining the learnings obtained, and drawing conclusions about the project.

  • Bibliography: Indicate the sources on which you relied to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

In addition to the report, students must submit the model of the right triangle. The quality of the model, as well as the accuracy in the application of the Pythagorean theorem, will be important criteria in evaluating the project.
