Regular Polygons: Introduction

Contextualization

Welcome to this fun and engaging geometry project, where we will explore a fascinating concept: regular polygons! So, what exactly are regular polygons? In general terms, a polygon is a closed flat figure with at least three straight sides connected in pairs to form a loop. On the other hand, a regular polygon is a polygon that is both equiangular (all its angles have the same measure) and equilateral (all its sides have the same measure). Common examples of regular polygons include the equilateral triangle, the square, and the regular hexagon.

Regular polygons are important objects of study in mathematics because they symbolize symmetry and regularity. Many important mathematical concepts and theorems derive from properties of regular polygons. Moreover, even though it may sometimes seem like we are dealing with abstract and theoretical shapes, regular polygons also have practical applications in many areas, including art, engineering, architecture, biology, and computer science.

You are probably wondering, what is the relevance of regular polygons in real life? Well, art and architecture are two of the many examples of how regular polygons apply to the real world. In architecture, for example, the regular hexagon is often used in honeycomb structures to maximize space efficiency. In art, regular polygons often appear in decorative patterns. Furthermore, regular polygons are fundamental tools in sciences such as biology and chemistry, where regular polygons help describe the structures of complex molecules.

Practical Activity: "The Art of Regular Polygons"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to solidify the understanding of regular polygons through a practical activity involving art and mathematics. Students will work in groups of 3 to 5 members, and each group will have to create an artwork using regular polygons.

Detailed Project Description

The focus of the project is the creation of a mosaic using regular polygons of different types (up to 3 different types) to form an interesting pattern. The groups should research the number of diagonals passing through the center in each type of regular polygon, calculate internal and external angles, and explore how the shapes can be combined to create an interesting visual pattern.

Required Materials

For the completion of this project, the following materials will be necessary:

  • Cardboard or cardstock paper (A3)
  • Ruler
  • Compass
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Colored pens or colored pencils
  • Scissors

Step by Step

  1. Choose three different types of regular polygons you want to work with.
  2. Research the number of diagonals passing through the center in each of these polygons. Discuss the results and their implications with the group.
  3. Calculate the internal and external angles of each chosen polygon type. Discuss the role of these angles in the formation of a regular polygon.
  4. Draw these regular polygons on a cardboard or cardstock paper. You can choose to make one large polygon or several smaller ones.
  5. Cut out the polygons using scissors.
  6. Arrange the cut polygons in a pattern on the cardboard or cardstock to form a mosaic.
  7. Glue the polygons on the paper.
  8. Fill in the polygons with colors to create a visually stunning artwork.
  9. In the end, each group should prepare a presentation explaining the artwork created, including explanations of the properties of the polygons used and the decisions made when creating the mosaic.

Project Deliverables

  • The finished artwork.

  • A presentation explaining the artwork, with emphasis on the mathematical properties of the polygons used.

  • A written report detailing the work done, including:

    • Introduction: Describe the chosen regular polygons and their relevance. Explain the objective and practical relevance of the activity.

    • Development: Describe the process of creating the mosaic, including the calculations performed (number of diagonals, internal and external angles) and how the shapes were combined to create the pattern. Discuss the results obtained in your research and practical activity.

    • Conclusion: Present the main lessons learned, insights gained, and discuss if the initial project objectives were achieved.

    • Bibliography: List all sources used in your calculations and research.

Remember that the report will be important to document your findings and reflections. It should be well-structured and with clear enough information so that any student in the class (or even the school) can replicate the project by reading the report.
