First-degree equations are fundamental elements of mathematics. Any math course, whether at the high school or university level, will have first-degree equations at some point. These equations help us understand the behavior of certain quantities in relation to others. For example, we can use a first-degree equation to understand how the price of a product changes in relation to the quantity produced.

Importance of First-Degree Equations

First-degree equations may seem purely theoretical, but in reality, they are extremely useful in various situations in our daily lives. They allow us to calculate discounts on prices, simple interest, distances in trips, economic variables, among others. Without first-degree equations, it would be much more complicated to understand and solve various problems in our daily lives.

Practical Activity: "The Equation of Success"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to consolidate knowledge about first-degree equations and enhance teamwork, problem-solving, and creative thinking skills. Additionally, it guides the construction of a written document that complements the skills acquired in the practical activity.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will be responsible for creating a board game that involves solving first-degree equations.

Required Materials:

  • Cardboard for the board's construction
  • Colored pens
  • Dice
  • Small pieces to be used as game tokens (can be made of paper or any available material)

Detailed Step-by-Step:

  1. Conceptualization: Each group must create a theme for their game. It can be a story, a journey, a competition, etc.
  2. Board Design: Using the cardboard and colored pens, students must draw the game board. The board should be divided into spaces representing the stages of the game.
  3. Question Creation: In each space on the board, the group must create a first-degree equation to be solved. The equation can be related to the game's theme or not.
  4. Game Rules: The rules must be clear and involve solving the equations to progress in the game.
  5. Testing and Adjustments: Groups must play and test their game, making necessary adjustments to the questions or rules.
  6. Finalization: After completing the game, groups must prepare a presentation for the class, explaining the theme, rules, and how solving equations is an integral part of the game.

Project Delivery

At the end of the project, each group must deliver:

  1. The Board Game: Must be physical and playable.
  2. Game Presentation: A 10-minute presentation showing and explaining the game to the class and the teacher.
  3. Written Report: A document containing sections of Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography, detailing the experience of creating the game, the mathematical concepts involved, and the socio-emotional skills developed.

In the report, the introduction should introduce the game's theme and the importance of first-degree equations in mathematics and daily life. The development should explain the theory of first-degree equations, describe the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used, and present the game's construction. The conclusions should point out the learnings obtained, both regarding mathematics and teamwork. Finally, in the bibliography, all sources consulted during the project should be listed.
