This concept is a fundamental part of the study of data, uncertainty, and calculations involving units of measurement. So, what are dubious digits?

Significant digits are the digits of a number that are known with certainty, while the last digit, the dubious one, is the one that has a certain margin of error. For example, when measuring the height of an object with a ruler, the part that we can assert with confidence is called a significant digit, while the last digit, which is usually an estimate, is the dubious digit. This last one allows us to understand that measurements have a certain margin of error, reflecting the precision of the measuring instrument used.

This notion allows us to understand the accuracy of measurements. When dealing with scientific and experimental data, it is natural that there is a certain amount of error. Understanding these dubious digits helps us to better understand this margin of error and to communicate more effectively and accurately the results of our calculations and measurements.

In real life, we use concepts similar to dubious digits every day. For example, when checking the amount of gasoline in our car's tank, we determine an approximate value because we do not have an exact measurement. It is common to round the value up or down. Similarly, companies use this concept when providing estimates for delivery, profits, etc. In short, the use of dubious digits is a common practice in many aspects of our daily lives.

Students should be divided into groups of 3 to 5 participants, as it is a group work, the workload will be higher. The project is planned to last from 2 to 4 hours per student and will be carried out within one week.

Each group will choose three different types of measuring instruments (e.g., ruler, tape measure, and micrometer) and perform a series of measurements. The goal is for the students themselves to identify and understand the issue of dubious digits in practice.

  • Three different types of measuring instruments (e.g., ruler, tape measure, micrometer)
  • Material to be measured (can be a simple object, such as a pen, available in the school environment)
  • Notebook for documentation
  • Computers with internet access for research
