Operations: Addition and Subtraction

Introduction

The central theme of this project is 'Addition and Subtraction', basic operations in Mathematics that are an essential part not only of the foundations of this discipline, but also of everyone's daily life. Addition and subtraction operations are inversely related to each other, a fact that mainly contributes to solving more complex mathematical problems. Even though they are basic operations, the complete understanding and mastery of these operations are fundamental for the comprehension of more advanced topics within Mathematics.

The project's objective is to promote a meaningful and effective learning of the concepts of addition and subtraction, applying them in real-life situations. Primarily, the student will be able to identify and correctly apply the addition and subtraction operations, recognizing, understanding, and appropriately using the associated terms: in addition, the addends and the sum, in subtraction, the minuend, subtrahend, and remainder.

Furthermore, this project aims to encourage collaboration and teamwork through a practical project, stimulating creative problem-solving, time management, and enhancing students' communication and proactivity skills through the elaboration of a project completion report.

Contextualization

The addition and subtraction operations are routinely applied in our lives, whether dealing with money, calculating distances, measuring volumes, among others. Thus, students can easily connect with the theme, as it is something very tangible and present in their daily lives. Moreover, mastering these operations is crucial for the continuation of more complex studies in mathematics, including algebra, calculus, and statistics.

As a practical project, students will have the opportunity to apply the concepts learned in the classroom to problem-solving. This not only reinforces theoretical learning but also demonstrates the direct applicability and usefulness of mathematical concepts in real life.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'The Supermarket of Operations'

Project Objective

This project aims at the practical application of addition and subtraction operations in a playful activity that simulates the management of a supermarket. The main objective is to reinforce students' understanding of addition and subtraction through tasks involving financial planning, inventory control, and time management. Additionally, the activity will stimulate teamwork, develop communication skills, and enhance strategic thinking and problem-solving.

Detailed Project Description

Each group of 3 to 5 students will be tasked with managing a 'Virtual Supermarket.' Each supermarket will have an initial inventory of products (with quantities and prices) and an initial budget for purchases. Students will have to perform addition and subtraction calculations to control the supermarket's inventory and finances, with the goal of maximizing profit.

Required Materials

  • Paper and pen for notes and calculations.
  • Computer with Internet access for price research and other information.
  • Digital spreadsheet or graph paper for inventory and financial control.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Formation of groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Each group will receive a list of products with their respective quantities and prices, as well as an initial budget.
  3. Students will plan the supermarket management, determining the products to be purchased to increase the inventory and the prices to be charged to customers.
  4. All addition and subtraction calculations necessary for financial planning and inventory control must be done manually by the students.
  5. The groups will have one week to complete the project. During this time, they will have to update the supermarket's inventory and finances, considering any product purchases or sales to customers.
  6. At the end of the one-week period, each group will present their supermarket, including a detailed financial report.

Project Deliverables and Connection with Suggested Activities

At the end of the week, each group must deliver the following:

  1. Updated inventory of the supermarket: This inventory should list all products, current quantities, and prices. The addition calculations (for new product acquisitions) and subtraction (for sales) must be detailed.

  2. Financial report: This report should show all transactions made, with all addition calculations (for sales) and subtraction (when they bought products for inventory) well detailed. The difference between the initial and final budget, showing profit or loss, must be clearly indicated.

  3. Final project report: This report, to be prepared following the structure suggested in the introduction of this project, should explain how the team managed the supermarket, the strategies adopted, the difficulties encountered, and how the problems were solved. The development part should include a detailed explanation of the addition and subtraction calculations performed and how these operations were essential for managing the supermarket. The conclusion should reflect on the learning acquired from the experience.

Remember that all these documents must be produced in collaboration among all group members and must reflect the contribution of all.
