Financial Mathematics: Compound Interest

Background

The world of mathematics is fascinating and it is everywhere in our lives, even in the most subtle and everyday details. Today we will delve into a special and deeply relevant topic: Compound Interest.

In the field of financial mathematics, compound interest is that which accrues not only on the initial capital of an investment or loan, but also on the interest accrued up to that point. This is a fundamental concept for understanding the financial operations carried out throughout the world, from simple day-to-day credit transactions to large economic movements between nations.

Understanding compound interest is having the key to understanding how money grows. The concept is rooted in the fundamentals of how banks, financial institutions, and even the stock market operate.

Compound interest is extremely relevant in the lives of all of us. For those seeking to make an investment, understanding how compound interest works can make all the difference when choosing the best option. If you need to take out a loan, understanding the concept can help you better understand how much you will actually be paying in the long run. In other words, compound interest has a direct impact on our financial decisions.

Moreover, understanding compound interest is of great importance in the development of fundamental life skills, such as the ability to do personal financial planning, an understanding of the responsible use of credit, and the ability to make informed and conscious investment decisions.

Hands-on Activity

Activity Title

“Building the Future: A Game of Investments and Compound Interest”

Project Goal

This project aims to deepen students' understanding of the concept of compound interest and its application in the real world, in addition to developing teamwork skills, time management, problem solving, and creative thinking.

Project Description

Students will create a board game where the objective is to maximize the value of an investment over time, through the understanding and application of compound interest. In addition, the game should present challenges that enhance the difference between simple and compound interest.

Required Materials

  • Card stock or cardboard
  • Markers or colored pencils
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Dice
  • Financial calculator or cell phone app.

Step by Step

  1. Group Formation: Each group should consist of 3 to 5 members.

  2. Study of the theme: Groups should delve into the concept of compound interest, using the suggested resources and seeking out complementary information.

  3. Game Creation: Each group should create a board game that allows players to invest a certain amount of money and track the accumulation of this investment over time, through the use of compound interest.

  4. Game Rules: The rules should be clear and need to favor those who make good use of compound interest. Challenges can be added that involve comparisons between the use of simple and compound interest.

  5. Prototype: Develop a working prototype of the game, building the game board and necessary elements.

  6. Game Test: Group members should play with each other to test the gameplay and balance of the game. Adjustments can be made at this stage.

  7. Game Presentation: Each group will present the game to the class, explaining the rules, the strategy for winning, and how compound interest is fundamental to the game. The groups should be prepared to answer questions and receive feedback.

  8. Report: Students should produce a detailed project report, explaining the game creation process, the rules, the importance of compound interest in the game and in the real world, and the challenges and learnings that emerged throughout the project.

Project Deliverables

1. Game Presentation: The complete board game, including all the pieces and a clear set of rules.

2. Oral Presentation: A 10-minute presentation explaining the game, its relationship to compound interest, and the strategy for winning.

3. Written Report: The report should include:

  • Introduction: Theoretical background on compound interest and its importance in the real world. It should also contain a description of the project's objective.
  • Development: A detailed description of the game creation process, from conception to the final prototype. A detailed explanation of the game rules and how compound interest is applied in it. Methodology used by the group to develop the project and discussion of the results obtained, such as the gameplay and the effectiveness of the game for teaching the concept of compound interest.
  • Conclusion: Review the main points of the project, the lessons learned, and the conclusions about the importance of compound interest, both for the game and for real life.
  • Bibliography: References to the materials used for learning about compound interest, as well as any resources that assisted in the creation of the game.

To write the report, we recommend that students divide the sections among themselves and work collaboratively. Review all the material together to ensure that all parts are connected and well-written. Remember: clarity and organization of ideas are as important as the content of the project.
