Compound interest is one of the most important topics in financial mathematics, often referred to as the "eighth wonder of the world." Unlike simple interest, where the interest rate is applied only to the initial amount, in compound interest, the interest rate is applied to both the initial amount and the accumulated interest up to that point in time, resulting in exponential growth of the total value.

Understanding the concept of compound interest is crucial not only for the study of financial mathematics but also for making everyday financial decisions. Whether saving for children's education, planning for retirement, or considering taking out a loan, the implications of compound interest can be profoundly significant.

Finally, it is important to remember that the study of compound interest also involves understanding concepts such as interest rate, time, present value, and future value.

Contextualization

Compound interest plays a significant role in many aspects of everyday life. For example, when taking out a bank loan to buy a house, the amount we will have to pay back to the bank will include both the principal amount of the loan and compound interest on that amount. In other words, ignoring compound interest can lead to substantial consequences.

On the other side of the coin, understanding how compound interest can make money "work for us" can be the key to a secure financial future. For example, by investing money in a savings account or retirement fund, compound interest accumulates over time, making the total investment value grow exponentially.

Practical Activity

Activity Title:

"Saving for the Future: A Study on Compound Interest"

Objective:

In this activity, students will design a long-term savings plan using the concept of compound interest. Students will calculate how different interest rates and time periods affect the growth of the initial investment. Additionally, they will compare the effects of simple and compound interest on the final savings.

Activity Description:

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5, will create a savings plan for 10, 20, and 30 years for an initial amount of R$ 10,000.00 considering an annual compound interest rate. They should vary the annual interest rate from 2% to 8%, calculating the accumulated value in each scenario. Additionally, using the same interest rate, students should calculate the final amount considering simple interest to compare the results.

Necessary Materials:

  • Calculator
  • Spreadsheet (Excel, Google Sheets, etc.)
  • Notebook and pen for notes and drafts
  • Textbook and/or online resources for research

Step by Step:

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.

  2. Research the formula for calculating compound and simple interest and discuss their understanding in the group.

  3. Using a spreadsheet, students should create a table to record different interest rates (2%, 4%, 6%, and 8%), the investment period (10, 20, and 30 years), and the final amount obtained in each case for simple and compound interest.

  4. Students should calculate the future amount for each scenario using compound and simple interest.

  5. Create graphs illustrating the evolution of the amount over time for each interest rate, and compare the difference between compound and simple interest.

  6. After making the simulations, students should prepare a report containing:

  • Introduction: Contextualize the topic, its relevance, and real-world application as well as the objective of this project. Briefly describe the savings plan created and the interest rates used.

  • Development: Explain the theory behind the calculation of compound and simple interest, explaining the differences between them. Detail the step-by-step activities performed, indicating the methodology used for calculations and graph creation. Present and discuss the results obtained from their simulations and comparisons.

  • Conclusion: Conclude the work by revisiting its main points, such as the difference between simple and compound interest and the importance of considering these concepts in financial planning. Discuss the lessons learned and the conclusions drawn from the project.

  • Bibliography: Indicate the sources used for the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

The report should be presented to the teacher at the end of the month.
