Triangles, geometric figures formed by three line segments that intersect pairwise at points called vertices, are of great importance to mathematics and practical life. In their simplicity, these figures hide remarkable relationships and provide the basis for many scientific and technological discoveries.

One of these remarkable relationships is that the sum of the interior angles of any triangle is always equal to 180º, that is, the same measure as a straight line. This key concept is fundamental for understanding other topics in geometry and trigonometry and has numerous applications in everyday life.

Introduction

Understanding the concept of the sum of the interior angles of a triangle is fundamental for the comprehension of many other topics in mathematics and physics. For example, in trigonometry, this concept is used to solve equations involving the angles of a triangle. In physics, it is used in the laws of reflection and refraction of light and in the theory of mirrors and lenses.

Activity Title: Triangle, the Angle Spy

Project Objective

This project aims to deepen students' understanding of the sum of the interior angles of a triangle by creating a three-dimensional model of a triangle, which will be analyzed and tested under various conditions.

Detailed Project Description

Each group of 3 to 5 students will build a three-dimensional model of a triangle using various materials. This model will allow them to verify and experiment with the property of the sum of the interior angles, providing visual and tactile evidence.

Divide the project into two parts:

  1. Theoretical Part: The group must conduct a detailed study on Triangles, with a focus on the Sum of the Interior Angles. This research should be carried out in Mathematics books and specialized websites. In addition, the group must identify and analyze practical applications of the property of the sum of interior angles of a triangle in the real world.

  2. Practical Part: The group must build a three-dimensional model of a triangle, which will facilitate the visualization and experimentation of the property of the sum of the angles. After building the model, the group must conduct a series of experiments, measuring and recording the angles for different types of triangles.

  • Cardboard
  • Ruler
  • Compass
  • Protractor
  • Scissors
  • Colored pens
  • Tape

Detailed Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity

  1. Conduct a detailed research on Triangles, focusing on the property of the Sum of the Interior Angles. Take note of all relevant information, including definitions, formulas, practical applications, etc. This research will be the basis of the final report.

  2. On the cardboard, draw triangles of different types (equilateral, isosceles, scalene), using the ruler and compass. Make sure all sides and angles are correct.

  3. Cut out the drawn triangles with scissors.

  4. Fold each triangle along the middle and mark the interior angles with colored pens.

  5. For each triangle, measure the interior angles using the protractor and record the values.

  6. Verify if the sum of the interior angles is equal to 180º for each triangle. Discuss the results obtained with the group.

  7. Prepare a project presentation. Include in the presentation the discussion of the results, the practical applications that were identified, and any interesting discoveries the group made during the project.

  8. Write the final report, following the provided guidelines. The report should include an Introduction, a Development (which should explain the theory and methodology of the project, detail the practical activity, and discuss the results), a Conclusion, and a Bibliography.

Project Deliverables

Students must deliver a well-structured report that explains in detail the theory about triangles and angles, documents the practical activities carried out, presents and discusses the results obtained, and shows the conclusions reached.

Students must also present the three-dimensional model of the triangle they built, demonstrate how they measured the angles, and explain how they concluded that the sum of the interior angles is 180º.

This project should be completed within a period of up to two weeks, including the time spent on theoretical research, planning and execution of the practical activity, and preparation of the final report.

Both the content of the report and the presentation will be evaluated (clarity, organization, accuracy of information, depth of research, etc.), as well as the individual contribution of each group member and the effectiveness of teamwork.
