Scientific Notation: Review

Contextualization

Scientific notation is a practical way to express very large or very small numbers. It is widely used in various areas of science, such as Physics, Chemistry, Astronomy, for example. Its use allows for simplifying writing and, especially, calculations with these extensive numbers.

Think, for example, of the distance between the Earth and the sun. The average distance is 150,000,000 kilometers. This is a huge number and, to facilitate writing and calculations, scientists prefer to use scientific notation. Thus, this distance is expressed as 1.5 x 10^8 km.

In fact, this form of number representation is a powerful tool for dealing with extreme magnitudes. Thanks to scientific notation, we can handle astronomical and microscopic dimensions with a high degree of precision.

In addition to this project, you can expand your knowledge about scientific notation through various resources available on the internet. It is recommended to use reliable materials, such as:

Remember to consult these and other reliable resources to expand your understanding of this fascinating topic.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: From Micro to Macroscale: Navigating the world through scientific notation

Project Objective: Understand the importance and usefulness of scientific notation through the study of topics related to the magnitude of natural phenomena on different scales.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will have to research different topics that encompass exorbitant or minuscule magnitudes, which are normally represented through scientific notation. The suggested topics are:

  1. Australia's Square Kilometre Array (SKA), a future high-power radio telescope.
  2. The Large Scale Structure of the Universe.
  3. The size of the hydrogen atom.
  4. Intergalactic distances.
  5. Mass measurements in chemistry, for example, the mass of a mole of atoms.

Each group should research detailed and specific information about their allocated topic, paying due attention to the representation of data in scientific notation. Additionally, students should also create a visual presentation (for example, a poster or a digital presentation) to demonstrate the size or distance, proportionally, involved in their topic.

Materials Needed: Computer with internet access, paper, pens, presentation software (such as PowerPoint or Google Slides).

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Initial Research: Each group should start with broad research on their topic, understanding the main information and how numbers are represented in scientific notation.

  2. Visual Representation: After the initial research, groups should consider how they can visually represent the numbers in their topic. This representation should be an illustration of the scientific notation concept that allows for the comparison of extremely different magnitudes.

  3. Detailed Research: Groups should deepen their research, seeking additional information that can enrich their presentation. At this stage, recent studies, advancements, or related applications should also be researched.

  4. Report Writing: Finally, each group should prepare the final report, including the information obtained in the research, the visual representation, and reflections on the importance of scientific notation.

Project and Written Document Submission:

The final project submission will consist of two parts:

  1. Visual Presentation: Each group will present their visual representation to the rest of the class. This presentation should include an explanation of how scientific notation was used for the researched topic.

  2. Written Report: This document should contain the four main topics mentioned earlier - Introduction, Development, Conclusion, and Bibliography. In the introduction, students should present the topic and its importance, as well as the project's objective. In the development, they should detail the theory of scientific notation and explain the activity carried out, discussing the results obtained. In the conclusion, they should summarize the main points, reflecting on the learnings and conclusions. The bibliography should list all sources consulted during the project.

Students should strive to ensure that their written report complements the information presented visually, providing a detailed explanation and reflection on the topic and the application of scientific notation. The report will be a record of the work done and can serve as a valuable reference for future studies.
