Democracy, in turn, is a system of government that ensures and values the participation of citizens in political decision-making. Ethics and democracy are closely related. Democratic exercise requires ethics, as it implies respect for others, equality, justice, among other principles.
Importance
Ethics for the construction of democratic values is fundamental for the formation of a just and egalitarian society. In a world where social relations are increasingly complex and diverse values coexist, the ability to respectfully dialogue, defend points of view in an argumentative manner, and respect diversity are essential skills.
Thus, ethics in democracy is a topic that should be addressed in the classroom, contributing to the formation of students as critical and participative citizens. This theme is relevant in the current social and political context, where we see growing polarization and disrespect for dialogue and differences.
Practical Activity
Title: "Ethical Debates for a Sustainable Democracy"
Project Objective:
To build and conduct a structured debate on a controversial topic related to ethics in democracy. The goal is for students to apply theoretical knowledge of ethics to construct solid arguments, develop communication and argumentation skills, and understand the importance of dialogue in building a democratic society.
Detailed Project Description:
Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will be assigned a controversial topic related to ethics in democracy to be debated. Each group should research and organize arguments for and against the proposed topic, considering the ethical perspective. For the debate, a representative from each group must defend the assigned position, either for or against.
Debate topics may vary, including subjects such as the ethics of civil disobedience, freedom of expression vs. hate speech, mandatory voting, etc. The choice of topics should be made by the teacher, but students should be encouraged to suggest topics of interest.
The debates will take place in the classroom, and all groups will have the opportunity to present their conclusions. After all groups have presented, a space will be opened for questions and discussion among all students.
Necessary Materials:

Step by Step:

Finally, each group should prepare a written report (maximum of 5 pages) containing the Introduction to the topic, the Development of the debate (pro and con arguments), Conclusions on the debated topic, and the Bibliography used. This document will be the final project submission and must be sent to the teacher within one week after the debates.
It is important to remember that the document should be written collaboratively by the group, in order to encourage collaboration among students. Additionally, the document must be clear, objective, and reflect the quality of the research conducted by the group.
