Introduction

Human rights are fundamental concepts that guarantee a minimum set of rights that every person possesses, regardless of nationality, gender, ethnic origin, color, religion, language, or any other condition. They include the right to life and freedom, freedom of opinion and expression, and equality before the law. In three words, human rights are fundamental, inalienable, and universal.

On the other hand, a totalitarian regime is a political system in which the state, usually under the control of a single person, dictator, has total and absolute authority over the lives of citizens. Human rights issues are especially critical in totalitarian regimes, where abuses and violations are often systematic and institutionalized.

Establishing a connection between these two themes, the project you will be challenged to carry out will enable a deep understanding of the relationship between totalitarian regimes and human rights.

Contextualization

In today's world, we still find countries operating under regimes considered totalitarian, and others where human rights are constantly violated. This project aims not only to educate about the theory behind these concepts but also to raise awareness about issues that affect millions of people worldwide every day.

Understanding human rights and how they are denied in totalitarian regimes is a key element for the education and training of conscious and engaged citizens. Therefore, participation in this project is essential.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Human Rights and Totalitarianism: A Case Study"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to facilitate students' understanding of human rights and totalitarian regimes. Students will analyze the relationship between the two through the study of a historical or current country that has suffered/is suffering from a totalitarian regime and thus understand the importance of preserving human rights.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5, and each group will be responsible for choosing a country that has suffered or is suffering from a totalitarian regime. Through in-depth study, students should investigate when, how, and why such a regime was established, which human rights were/are being violated, and what the consequences have been/are for the country's population.

The groups will have one week to complete this project. Within this period, each student must dedicate two to four hours to the tasks involved in this work: research, group discussion, and document writing.

1. Internet access for information research.
2. Material for notes (paper and pen or computer).

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Completion

1. Group formation.
2. Choice of the country to be studied by the group.
3. Research on the chosen country's totalitarian regime, addressing: historical background, important figures, reasons for the rise of the totalitarian regime, regime duration, implemented policies, etc.
4. Research on how human rights were/are being violated in this country, identifying denied rights and specifying specific cases.
5. Group discussion for analysis and interpretation of the collected data.
6. Collective writing of the document, dividing it into introduction, development, conclusion, and bibliography.
7. Review and final editing of the document before submission.

Project Deliverables

The deliverable will be a written document as indicated above. The report must contain an introduction that contextualizes the topic addressed, the relevance and application of this in the real world, and the project's objective. In the development, each group must explain the theory behind the project's central themes (human rights and totalitarian regimes), detail the methodology used for research, the results obtained, and a discussion on them. In conclusions, each group must summarize the main points of the project, explain the learnings obtained, and the conclusions drawn. Finally, the bibliography used must be indicated.

Students must explicitly state within the report all the research steps they carried out, in detail, so that the learning process is evident. All research must be properly cited and referenced in the bibliography, according to ABNT standards. The report should be between 10 to 15 pages, including images, graphs, or tables that students find relevant.
