Electronic Games

Contextualization

The electronic gaming industry has been gaining increasing relevance in the world, not only from an economic perspective, but also culturally and socially. Several games, which were once seen only as pastimes or hobbies, are now recognized as true electronic sports, with world championships that attract thousands of spectators. This incredible evolution has led to a deep discussion and reflection on this universe in the educational field.

Video games, in their various forms and platforms, offer several learning opportunities. Various content and skills can be developed through them, such as strategy, collaboration, quick thinking, motor coordination, and even specific knowledge, depending on the game. In addition, eSports, as electronic sports are known, promote the development of socio-emotional skills such as perseverance, resilience, teamwork, and leadership.

This project proposes to explore electronic games in education, especially in the Physical Education discipline. Although it may seem paradoxical at first glance, this discipline goes beyond bodily movement. It also encompasses knowledge about the body and its limits, as well as health promotion. And believe it or not, electronic games play an important role in this context, which leads us to the central question of this work: How can electronic games be integrated into the pedagogical practice of Physical Education and contribute to the holistic development of students?

To deepen your knowledge and prepare for this journey, I suggest the following resources:

  • Book "Reality is Broken: Why Games Make Us Better and How They Can Change the World" by Jane McGonigal. The author holds a PhD in performance studies and is one of the world's leading references in gamification. She advocates the power of games to transform the real world. (The Portuguese edition "A Realidade em Jogo" is available for purchase.)
  • Video The benefits of video games from the Nerdologia channel. This video clearly and simply presents the advantages that video games can provide, from improving vision to enhancing quick decision-making.
  • Article The effects of video games on the brain from G1 which presents a study on the impact of electronic games on the human brain.
  • Documentary "Free to Play" available on Netflix, which shows the routine and challenges of professional eSports players.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Game Day: The Exploration of Electronic Sports in Physical Education

Project Objective:

Analyze and understand how electronic games can be integrated into the pedagogical practice of Physical Education, as well as explore the impact of these games on the socio-emotional and cognitive development of students.

Detailed Project Description:

The groups, composed of 3 to 5 students, will explore the intersection between electronic games and the Physical Education discipline. The activity will be carried out in two main parts: the first involves theoretical research on the benefits and challenges of electronic games, while the second consists of organizing, executing, and analyzing an eSports tournament.

Necessary Materials:

  • Internet access;
  • Computer or gaming console;
  • Books and/or scientific articles on eSports;
  • Items for note-taking (such as notebooks, pens, etc.);
  • Camera for taking photos and videos of the tournament (optional).

Detailed Step-by-Step for Carrying Out the Activity:

1. Research: Each group should start with in-depth research on electronic games and their connection to Physical Education. Topics such as the benefits of playing electronic games (cognitive, social, psychological, etc.), the influence of video games on health (sedentary lifestyle, motor benefits, etc.), and the socio-emotional aspects involved in electronic sports should be addressed. This research should take into account the bibliography suggested in the project's contextualization and other relevant sources.

2. Game Selection: The students should choose a console or computer game to be used in the tournament. The choice of the game should be justified based on the research findings, considering aspects such as gameplay, popularity, level of difficulty, and potential for the development of useful skills.

3. Planning: A plan for the tournament should be developed. The plan should include the tournament structure (number of games, duration of each match), game rules, organization of competitors, choice of venue (respecting social distancing norms, if necessary), and a plan to address any potential problems that may arise.

4. Execution: The tournament should be carried out following the developed plan. The students should document the event, whether through notes, photos, videos, or any other means they find most suitable.

5. Analysis: After the tournament, the students should analyze the results. How did the participants feel? What skills were developed? Was there any impact on social interaction? How did the participants deal with victory/defeat?

6. Report: Finally, the students should produce a detailed report of the project. The Introduction should present the relevance of the chosen topic and the project's objectives. The Development should present the researched theory, detail the activity, describe the methodology used, and discuss the results obtained. The Conclusion should summarize the main points of the project, explain the learnings acquired, and draw conclusions. The Bibliography should indicate the sources consulted. Check and revise the report several times before submitting it.

Remember: the project can last more than 12 hours per student and should cover the main aspects of electronic sports and their relationship with Physical Education, encouraging collaboration, problem-solving, creative thinking, and other personal and interpersonal skills.
