Introduction

Initially, we will delve into the origins of sports, observing how different civilizations incorporated competitive physical activities into their cultures. We will learn about the earliest known sports, from Mesoamerican ball games, ancient Chinese sports, to the rise of athletics in ancient Greece.

Next, we will observe how sports professionalized and globalized, with the advent of modern soccer, the Olympics, and the rise of professional sports leagues. We will learn how these developments reflected broader changes in society, including industrialization, the emergence of a global middle class, and globalization.

Finally, we will explore how sports continue to evolve in modern times. How have sports become a multi-billion dollar business? How is technology changing the way sports are played and watched? How are issues of gender, race, and politics being negotiated on the playing fields?

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Recreating the History of Sports"

Project Objective

In this project, groups will choose a specific sport and, through research and interpretation, recreate the historical evolution of that sport, from its origins to the present, using the digital platform of their choice.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will select a sport of their interest to research. The sports can range from the most popular ones (such as soccer or basketball) to those with a rich history, but less known (such as capoeira or Irish hurling).

Each team will then develop a multimedia project that represents the historical evolution of this sport over time. This project can take various forms, such as a video, a slide presentation, an interactive timeline, a podcast, etc.

The projects should include, but not be limited to, the following points:

• Sport origins: When, where, and how did it originate?
• Sport evolution: What were the main stages of its progression? How has it changed over the years and why?
• Important figures: Who are the people who played a significant role in the history of this sport?
• Social and cultural impact: How has the sport influenced society and the culture around it, and vice versa?
• Current state of the sport: How is it played today? What are the main competitions and who are the key players?

Required Materials

The materials to be used will depend on the presentation format chosen by the students. However, it is essential that students have access to the internet for research purposes and to the chosen digital platform for project development.

1. Introduction: Brief presentation of the chosen sport, explaining its relevance and the project's objective.
2. Development: Detailed history of the sport, including its origin, evolution, important figures, social and cultural impact, and current state. Here, students should mention the materials and methodologies used in the research and development of the multimedia project.
3. Conclusions: Discussion on the team's main findings. Students should reflect on how the history of the sport reflects broader aspects of society and culture.
4. Bibliography: List of all sources used during the project development, formatted according to ABNT standards.
