Electronic Games

Contextualization

The evolution of technology has brought us a global phenomenon: electronic games. This form of entertainment that was born decades ago as a simple hobby, has become a thriving industry that permeates cultures and age groups. Electronic games are no longer solely a form of amusement, but also a recognized sport with heated competitions and international tournaments.

The field of physical education that historically focused on traditional activities such as sports and gymnastics, has adapted to acknowledge the value of video games. After all, playing video games can not only enhance motor coordination and cognitive skills, but is also an activity that promotes socialization and teamwork.

With this project we intend to address video games from both an educational and physical perspective. We will treat the subject not only as an aspect of fun, but as a social and sports phenomenon, with its own set of rules and challenges.

Importance of the subject

Video games are a current reality in the lives of most young people, that cannot be ignored in the educational setting. Understanding the dynamics, rules and challenges of video games can provide us with a new approach to educating and engaging students.

Furthermore, the video game industry is one of the most thriving today, creating jobs in diverse areas, from programming and design to marketing and administration. Thus, understanding the functioning and the impact of video games can open many professional opportunities for students.

To further explore the subject we suggest the following resources:

  1. The impact of video games in society - Article (in portuguese) exploring the positive impact of video games in society and education.

  2. The influence of video games in education - Article (in portuguese) addressing the use of video games as pedagogical tools.

  3. A history of video games - Documentary (in portuguese) telling the history of video games from its origins to modern days.

Check these sources, discuss them with your colleagues and get ready to dive into the world of video games!

Practical activity

Title of the activity: The world of Esports

Objective of the project

To deepen the students' understanding of video games, their rules, gameplay, and their importance in the sports and social scenario of today.

Students must research a popular game, analyzing its mechanics, rules, competitive level and social influence. Additionally, they will carry out a virtual 'tournament' in which they will play the game, registering the results and reflecting on the experience.

Detailed description of the project

In groups of 3 to 5 members, the students must choose a popular video game to study. It can be an esport (like League of Legends, Fortnite, etc.), an educational game or a popular console game.

Phase 1: Research

Each group must research their chosen game, considering aspects such as:

  • History of the game: When and how was it created? Who were its creators?
  • Mechanics of the game: How do you play? What are the rules? How do you win?
  • Competitive aspect: Are there any leagues or tournaments? How do they work?
  • Social influence: What is the relevance of the game in today's world? How does it impact society?

Phase 2: Tournament

After researching, the groups will organize a virtual 'tournament' of their chosen game among themselves. Each group member must play the game for a certain time and register their results.

The dynamics of the tournament can vary depending on the game chosen. For instance, if it is an esport, the group members could compete among themselves or against other players online. If the game is educational, the group members could try to achieve the highest score or complete the most levels in the shortest time possible.

Phase 3: Report

Finally, the groups must write a detailed report about the activity. The report must include the following parts:

  1. Introduction: Contextualization of the chosen game and its importance in the world of video games.
  2. Development: Report of the research carried out, detailed description of the mechanics of the game, rules, competitiveness and social influence. Presentation and analysis of the results of the 'tournament'.
  3. Conclusions: Reflections on the subject matter learned during the project, highlighting the key learning points.
  4. References: List of the sources consulted in the research.

Required materials

  • Computers/Internet for researching and playing the chosen game.
  • Software for writing the report (i.e.: Google Docs or Word).

Detailed step-by-step

  1. Form groups and choose the game to be studied and played.
  2. Research about the game, gathering relevant information about its history, mechanics, competitiveness, and social influence.
  3. Organize and carry out the game 'tournament' among the group members.
  4. Register the results of the 'tournament'.
  5. Write a detailed report following the guidance above.
  6. Review the report together to ensure that everything is clear and complete.
  7. Submit the final report on the set date.

Assessment criteria

  • Completeness and clarity of the information in the report (30%)
  • Depth and thoughtfulness of the analysis of the 'tournament' results (30%)
  • Quality of the research carried out (20%)
  • Timely submission of the report (20%)
