But perhaps you are wondering, why should we study galaxies? Well, galaxies are the building blocks of the Universe. Understanding how galaxies form and evolve is crucial to understanding the cosmos as a whole. Furthermore, the study of galaxies allows us to learn more about dark matter, dark energy, and black holes.

Project Objective

The objective of this project is for you, in groups of 3 to 5 people, to research, create, and present an original galaxy using easily accessible materials. The project should address the types of galaxies, their structure, composition, and location in the universe.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will have to create an original galaxy, based on the shapes and characteristics of galaxies that exist in reality and studied during the project. The project will allow students to understand theoretical concepts while applying them in a practical way.

Required Materials

1. Cardboard or cardstock in different colors.
2. Colored pencils, colored pens, and markers.
3. Scissors.
4. Glue.
5. Sequins or glitter to represent the stars.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

1. Research (1 hour): Start the project by researching the different forms of galaxies. Use the resources indicated at the beginning of this project for your initial research, but do not limit yourself to them.
2. Choose the type of galaxy and create the artistic conception (1 hour): After understanding the types of galaxies, choose a type of galaxy that the group would like to create. Draw a sketch of how the galaxy would be.
3. Creating the galaxy (2 hours): Using the necessary materials, create the galaxy based on the sketch made. Remember, galaxies are not flat, but have a three-dimensional shape. Adapt your construction to represent this in the best way possible.
4. Documentation and report elaboration (2 hours): During the creation of the galaxy, document the process through notes and photos. After creation, use this information to write the project report.

The project delivery will be divided into two parts:
