Contextualization

Physics is the science that studies the fundamental laws of nature and the phenomena that occur due to the existence of matter and energy. In high school, we are introduced to some of these concepts and principles, which help us understand how the world works.

One of the fundamental topics of physics that we study is "Forces". Force is what causes an object with mass to change its velocity (which includes starting to move from a state of rest), that is, to accelerate. Forces are the result of the interaction between bodies, and there are several of them that we deal with in our daily lives.

Among the most basic forces that we study in physics are gravity, normal force, tension force, and friction force. Gravity is the force that the Earth exerts on all bodies, pulling them towards its center. Normal force is the force that an object exerts on another in response to gravity or any other force that presses two objects together. Tension force is the force that pulls an object when a rope, chain, or any other type of "connector" is stretched. Finally, friction force is the force that resists the movement of an object when it slides or rolls over another.

Importance and Real-World Applications

Understanding these forces is important because they are constantly acting on us and everything around us. For example, when we are standing, gravity is pulling us down, while the normal force of the floor is pushing us up. When we pull a suitcase with wheels, we are exerting a tension force on it and at the same time there is a friction force acting against the movement of the suitcase.

These concepts of force are not only useful for understanding the world around us, but they are also fundamental in many fields of engineering and technology. From designing buildings and bridges (which must be able to withstand the weight of their own structure and what they carry) to developing new materials with a low coefficient of friction to reduce energy loss in machines.

As a reliable resource for studying this topic, I recommend the book "Conceptual Physics" by Paul G. Hewitt. This book presents the fundamental concepts of physics in an easy-to-understand way. In addition, the website "Só Física" (https://www.sofisica.com.br/) has a section dedicated to the laws of motion and the forces that govern them. Finally, there are excellent educational videos on YouTube on the "Ciência Todo Dia" channel, especially those that refer to Newton's laws of motion.

Hands-on Activity: "Investigating Forces"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is for students to explore and understand the basic forces that act on a body: gravity, normal, tension, and friction.

Activity Description

Students will form groups of 3 to 5 participants. Each group will be responsible for conducting an experiment to investigate one of the mentioned forces. The experiment should be designed to illustrate the concept of force and how it acts on an object.

Materials Required

The materials will depend on the specific experiment that each group plans to investigate their designated force. However, some materials that students may need include:

  • Objects of different masses (e.g., books, wooden blocks)
  • A flat surface (e.g., table, floor)
  • Ropes or elastics
  • Scale

Step-by-Step

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students and select the force you want to investigate.
  2. Plan and design an experiment to explore your chosen force. The experiment should be simple but effective in demonstrating the principle of force.
  3. Compile a list of materials needed for the experiment and gather those materials.
  4. Perform the experiment, taking careful notes of your observations and results.
  5. Analyze the results and discuss the behavior of the force based on these observations.
  6. Prepare a detailed report on the experiment.

Written Report

After conducting the experiment, each group needs to prepare a report containing the following topics:

1. Introduction

Provide context for the force being investigated, its relevance, and real-world applications. State the objective of the experiment.

2. Development

Detail the theory behind the central force of the project. Explain the experiment in detail, including the methodology used and a step-by-step description of the experiment. Present and discuss the results obtained.

3. Conclusion

Summarize the main points of the work, explicitly stating the lessons learned and the conclusions drawn about the project.

4. Bibliography

Indicate the sources you used to work on the project.

Assessment Criteria

In addition to the correct execution of the experiment and the writing of the report, the assessment will take into account the effectiveness of the experiment in illustrating the concept of force, the ability to work in a team, the organization and professionalism of the report, and the oral presentation of the results.
