Project Objective

The objective of this project is to explore a practical, fun, and engaging way of understanding the force of static friction.

Groups of 3 to 5 students will conduct a series of experiments to investigate the force of static friction. They will use different materials and weights, recording their results and concluding about the effect of surface and object weight on the force required to set the object in motion - the force of static friction.

  • Precision scale
  • A straight and smooth surface of at least 2 meters (this could be a hallway or similar space in your school)
  • Various objects of different materials and weights (books, sneakers, wooden blocks, sandbags, metal pieces, etc.)
  • A ruler or measuring tape
  • Paper and pens for note-taking

Detailed Step-by-Step Procedure for the Activity

  1. First, students should review the theory about the force of static friction. They can use the reference materials recommended in the contextualization.

  2. Next, they should set up the experiment location. A flat and smooth surface should be chosen to conduct the experiments.

  3. Students should choose different objects of various materials and weights for their experiments. Each object should be precisely weighed, and this information should be recorded.

  4. The experiment will consist of trying to move each object on the smooth surface by gently and gradually pushing it until it starts moving. The exact moment the object starts moving corresponds to the force of static friction. To measure this force, students should make an estimation based on their effort to move the object.
