Vertical movement is a fundamental concept in physics, particularly in classical mechanics. Understanding vertical movement is vital to comprehend a series of natural and technological phenomena, from the fall of an apple to the launch of a rocket.

Physics, as one of the most primordial sciences, has the power to relate a variety of natural phenomena using a rather limited number of fundamental principles. One of these is the notion of movement, which is described through kinematics, a branch of physics that studies the description of body movements without considering their causes.

In a first approach, we study movement in one dimension. That is, bodies can move in only one direction. When the direction of movement is upwards or downwards, we call it vertical movement. Here we will focus on vertical movements, taking advantage of the simplest concepts of kinematics and enhancing our knowledge about body movements.

Vertical movement is essential and omnipresent in our lives, and understanding its characteristics and laws is crucial for a variety of fields and professions. For example, engineers use these principles when designing bridges and buildings, meteorologists need to understand vertical movement when studying storms and wind directions, marine biologists use this understanding when studying the movements of fish and other marine creatures, and astronauts could not even have begun to explore space without a profound understanding of vertical movement.

We can observe vertical movement in our daily lives, such as when we throw a ball upwards and see it return to the ground or when we watch the rain falling from the sky. By changing our perspective, we begin to see the world in a very different and deeper way. By understanding vertical movement, we can better understand the world around us.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Vertical Movement of an Air Balloon"

Project Objective:

This project aims to analyze and understand vertical movement, practicing distance measurement and calculating displacement time in a practical and fun context.

Detailed Project Description:

Students, in groups of 3 to 5, should launch an air balloon and record its vertical movement. The group should measure the time it takes for the balloon to rise, record its speed, and the distance it travels until it falls back down. Based on this information, students will be able to calculate the balloon's average speed and discuss which factors influence this vertical movement. For example, air resistance, temperature difference between the air inside and outside the balloon, among others.

Required Materials:

  1. Balloon
  2. Helium or Hydrogen (to fill the balloon)
  3. Stopwatch
  4. Measuring tape
  5. Camera (optional, for experiment recording)

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. With the balloon filled, choose an open and safe location for the experiment.
  2. Release the balloon vertically and start the stopwatch when it begins to ascend.
  3. Record the time it takes for the balloon to reach the highest point and start falling.
  4. Again, record the time it takes for the balloon to fall to the ground from the highest point.
  5. Collect all data, such as ascent time, fall time, and distance traveled.

Project Deliverables:

  1. Report: The report should have an introduction explaining the concept of vertical movement and its relevance to physics. It should then present the experiment's development, explaining the procedures adopted, the methodology used, and the results obtained. It should also present the conclusions, revisiting the initial objectives and presenting the discoveries made by the students. Finally, the bibliography should be correctly referenced.

  2. Report Presentation: The group should prepare a presentation for the class, explaining the experiment, sharing their results, and conclusions. This will contribute to improving their communication and synthesis skills.

  3. Experiment Video: If available, the group should prepare a short video showing how they conducted the experiment. This video should be attached to the report. This will contribute to the creativity and proactivity of the students.

  4. Class Discussion: After the presentation, there will be a question and answer session to deepen the students' understanding of the topic.

Remember, the purpose of the project is not only to understand vertical movement but also to develop teamwork collaboration skills and time management.
