Modernity: Ethnocentrism and Racism

Contextualization

Theoretical Introduction

In the study of Sociology, understanding the relationship between individual and society, and how personal attitudes and perspectives can affect social dynamics is crucial. Ethnocentrism, Racism, and Modernity are key concepts that play a vital role in this arena.

Ethnocentrism is the tendency to view and interpret the world through the lens of one's own culture, considering it superior and using it as a basis to judge other cultures. This can lead to prejudice and discrimination, a marginalization of other groups, and a distorted understanding of the world.

Racism is a system of prejudice and discrimination based on the belief that one "race" is superior to others. Although science has categorically rejected the idea of distinct human races, racism persists as a potent force that shapes societies and profoundly - and often detrimentally - impacts the lives of individuals.

Modernity, on the other hand, is a historical-sociocultural period characterized by a confidence in reason and science, the development of capitalism and individualism, and the progressive secularization of society. Modernity brought about new understandings and challenges of self and other, the individual and the collective, the local and the global.

Contextualization

These themes are highly relevant to our daily lives and the world we live in. We are in an era of increasing diversity and mobility, where different cultures, beliefs, and identities interact and collide in unprecedented ways. This makes it imperative to have a clear and critical understanding of Ethnocentrism, Racism, and Modernity.

These concepts allow us to comprehend not only the structures and dynamics of society but also how we, as individuals, can contribute to a more just, equitable, and tolerant society. They help us understand how our attitudes and biases, often unconscious, can contribute to perpetuating racism and ethnocentrism, and reflect on how we can challenge and change those attitudes.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Deconstructing Prejudices: A Board Game"

Project Goal

To comprehend the concepts of Ethnocentrism, Racism, and Modernity by actively participating in a sociocultural game that encourages exploring diverse perspectives and questioning prejudices.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 and each group will be responsible for creating a board game or card game that explores the concepts under study.

The games should be designed in such a way that players take on the identities of different characters representing diverse cultural and racial backgrounds. Situations within the gameplay should challenge the players' prejudices and make them reflect upon the concepts of Ethnocentrism and Racism.

The game should take into account the human context in which racism and ethnocentrism develop and manifest, and how modernity influences these relationships.

Groups are encouraged to be creative in their game design, but it is important that it is adequately informative and educational.

Necessary Materials

  • Cardboard or similar material to create the game board base
  • Colored cardstock or paper
  • Pens, colored markers
  • Ruler, scissors, glue
  • Internet access for research

Step-by-Step:

  1. Research: Investigate and take notes on the concepts of Ethnocentrism, Racism, and Modernity and how they interrelate in modern societies.

  2. Brainstorm: Discuss as a group to develop the central idea of your game, which characters will be represented, what situations players will encounter, how the concepts will be embedded in the game.

  3. Creation: Design and build your game using the provided materials. Remember to create clear rules for your game.

  4. Testing: Play your game with your group members and observe where improvements can be made.

  5. Revision and Finalization: Make the necessary corrections and finalize your game.

Project Deliverables

Students should submit a written document, in the form of a report, structured as follows:

  1. Introduction: Introduce the topic, its relevance, and the project's goal.

  2. Development: Explain the theory behind the main topics addressed in the game (Ethnocentrism, Racism, Modernity), detail the game creation process including the decisions made regarding characters, game situations, rules, etc., and how these reflect and question the chosen theoretical concepts. Also comment on the methodology used (teamwork, research, game design, etc) and discuss the results obtained in the initial playtest of the game, indicating the changes made as a result of this playtest.

  3. Conclusion: Reflect on what the process and the game have taught you and your teammates about the concepts of Ethnocentrism, Racism, and Modernity. State if and how the project has changed your understanding of these concepts and their implications in real life.

  4. Bibliography: List the sources of information used in the research and creation of the game.

In addition to the report, students are required to present their game to the class, explaining its rules, concepts, and gameplay. The physical game should also be turned in as part of the project assessment.
