Sociology is a discipline that studies society and human forms of interaction. In an increasingly globalized world, the need to understand social relations and global connections becomes more evident. Many of these relations are shaped by migratory flows, which have a direct impact on contemporary societies.

Migratory flows are population movements from one place to another. They can occur within a country (internal migration) or between countries (international migration). These flows are influenced by a variety of factors, including conflicts, poverty, unemployment, natural disasters, and opportunities for a better quality of life. In our project, we will focus on international migration and its impacts on contemporary societies.

In the context of globalization, migratory flows are becoming increasingly frequent. With technological advancements and ease of mobility, international migration has grown exponentially. According to the UN, the number of international migrants has almost doubled in the last four decades. But how does this affect contemporary societies?

The increase in migratory flows poses a series of challenges and opportunities for contemporary societies. Immigrants can contribute to cultural diversity, promoting the exchange of ideas and experiences. However, they may also face xenophobia, discrimination, and inequality. Additionally, immigrants often send remittances to their families in their countries of origin, which can have a significant impact on local economies.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Contemporary Migratory Flows and their Social Implications.

Project Objective: Develop an in-depth understanding of contemporary migratory movements, their reasons, influences of globalization, and their impact on the societies and environments involved.

Detailed Project Description:

In this activity, students will work in groups of 3 to 5 individuals. The project should be developed in one week, estimating a total of 2 to 4 hours of work per student. The group must choose a contemporary migratory flow as the object of study and conduct an in-depth research on the topic.

Based on their research, the group must create a script for a mini-documentary, which will highlight the causes, process, and consequences of the selected migration. The mini-documentary should address:

1. The causes for the migratory flow (economic, political, conflicts, natural disasters, etc.)
2. The influence of globalization on the migratory flow.
3. The impacts of migration on the societies of origin and destination (cultural, political, social, and economic changes).
4. Reflections on how societies can deal more effectively with migratory flows, considering the human rights of migrants.

Materials Needed:

1. Internet access for research.
2. Text editing software, such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs, to prepare the script.
3. A notebook for summarizing the research results.
4. Video editing software (optional), if the group chooses to turn the script into a video.

Step by Step:

1. Research: After forming the groups, students must choose a specific migratory flow to focus on during the project. Then, the groups must conduct a detailed research on this flow, using reliable sources of information.

2. Script Preparation: After gathering all the necessary information, the group must collaborate in creating a script for a mini-documentary, following the suggested points above.

3. Review and Editing: Once the first draft of the script is completed, the group must review and edit the script to ensure clarity, accuracy, and fluency. Students must ensure that all information is correct and sources are properly cited.

4. Presentation (optional): If the group decides, they can turn the script into a video and share it with the class. This requires video editing software.

Project Deliverables:

The groups must deliver the complete script of the mini-documentary, which should clearly and detailedly present all the information gathered during the research.

Additionally, students must write a detailed report, structured as follows:

1. Introduction: Contextualization of the chosen migratory flow, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the project's objective.

2. Development: Theoretical explanation of key concepts, detailing the activities carried out, presenting the methodology used, and discussing the results obtained. Each point addressed in the mini-documentary script must be expanded, with the presentation of data, facts, analyses, among others.

3. Conclusion: Students must conclude the report by synthesizing their main points, reflecting on the learnings obtained, and drawing conclusions from the project.

4. Bibliography: Students must indicate all sources used during the research, following the appropriate citation format.

In the end, students should have acquired a deep understanding of contemporary migratory flows and their relationship with globalization, as well as enhanced skills in teamwork, research, writing, critical and creative thinking, among others.
