Humanity has always been in relationship with technologies, shaping its work and the world around it. From the mastery of fire and the creation of the first tools, through the dominance of metals, the invention of writing, the industrial revolution, until reaching the information age we live in today, technology has always been closely linked to human development and how we work.

Technology has profoundly modified not only the way we work, but also work relationships, the economy, and society itself. The development of new technologies has been a constant throughout human history, always bringing along a restructuring of work and society.

Today we live in an era of accelerated technological advancements. The so-called Fourth Industrial Revolution, driven by technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, nanotechnology, quantum, synthetic biology, 3D printing, and a series of other innovations, promises to further transform the way we live and work.

This project aims to understand the relationship between man, technology, and work, exploring from the earliest nomadic and sedentary societies to the current man-technology-work relationship in the digital age. Through a sociological approach, we will seek to comprehend these transformations and observe their impacts on contemporary society.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: The Journey of Man: Work and Technology through the Ages.

Project Objective:

To understand the relationship between man, technology, and work at different moments in history until the current digital age. Discuss the socio-environmental impacts and changes in work relationships resulting from technological advancements.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will be responsible for representing a specific phase of the relationship between man, technology, and work.

The phases to be explored are:

1. Nomadic and sedentary populations, the beginning of the man-work-technology relationship.
2. Emergence of cities and the consolidation of agricultural and industrial societies.
3. The Industrial Revolution and the advent of capitalism.
4. The information age and the influence of computers and the internet on work.
5. The current digital age, the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and the prediction of the future of work.

Each group must conduct in-depth research on their assigned phase, discussing the following questions:

• How did the technology of the time influence work?
• What socio-environmental impacts did the technology of the time bring?
• How did society transform with the evolution of technology and work?

Additionally, each group should relate the discussions to sociology and another discipline chosen freely by the group, to provide an interdisciplinary analysis of the topic.

Required Materials:

• Online research resources, such as e-books, documentaries, scientific articles, etc.
• Artistic materials for creating a visualization panel: cardboards, paints, colored pens, magazines for cutouts, etc.
• Presentation resources: PowerPoint, Prezi, etc.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

1. Each group receives their respective phase of the man-work-technology relationship for research.
2. Students should start an in-depth research on their assigned phase, using the key questions as a guide.
3. Each group must choose a second discipline (different from sociology) to relate to their studies and discussions.
4. Students will create an artistic visualization panel representing their era and the main discussion points. This panel will be used during the presentation.
5. Each group will prepare an oral presentation lasting 15-20 minutes, explaining their research, findings, and the relationship with the chosen disciplines.
6. At the end of the project, each group will write a report addressing the main points of their presentation, including introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography used.

Project Deliverables:

• Artistic visualization panel of the phase of the man-work-technology relationship explored by the group. This delivery should creatively and critically represent the impact of technology on people's lives in the studied era and the socio-environmental consequences of such technologies.
• Oral presentation of 15-20 minutes, where the group will share live the research done, including the main points, the relationship with the chosen discipline, and the conclusions drawn.
• Written report containing Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography. The report should be aligned with the oral presentation and the panel. The introduction should contextualize the studied phase, the development should present the theory and methodology used, the conclusion should summarize the main points and explain the learnings and conclusions, and the bibliography should list the research sources used.
