Contextualization

Youth is a crucial stage in life. During this period, we are presented with a series of challenges that shape our experiences and worldviews. Sociology, as a science that studies human interactions and behaviors, plays a fundamental role in the analysis and understanding of these phenomena and social processes.

Within the scope of Sociology, there are several perspectives that approach youth, each with distinct focuses and premises. Some approaches focus on the behavioral and cultural aspects, others on the political, economic and social elements. There are also those who seek to understand the forms of engagement and social participation of this age group. Therefore, studying youth from a sociological perspective implies recognizing the multiple factors that interfere in the lives of young people and in the construction of their identities.

Understanding youth from a sociological perspective is also perceiving how the idea of being young is socially constructed and how this construction changes in different societies and over time. Reflections on social transformations, the insertion of young people in the world of work, youth policies and issues of belonging and identity are essential for understanding the phenomenon of youth.

Youth has been increasingly relevant in our contemporary societies. Young people, besides being seen as the future, are increasingly taking space in the economy, politics and socio-environmental discussions. In Brazil, youth represents about 26% of the population, which makes it a potentially transformative social force.

However, young people also face significant challenges, such as unemployment, poor education, violence and social inequality. These problems, although shared by other groups, have specific characteristics when it comes to youth, which makes their study even more relevant.

To deepen the theme, we recommend reading the book "Juventude em Conflito - Quem é o jovem brasileiro hoje?" (Zaccone, 2018), available in the school library. In addition, we suggest reading articles and reports on the Datafolha website, which provides a series of surveys and statistics on Brazilian youth. To understand the current debate on youth, we recommend the documentary "Juventude Brasileira: sonhos e realidades" from Youtube, which brings testimonials from young people from different regions of Brazil.

Practical Activity: "Youth in Focus: Reflections and Sociological Representations"

Project Objective:

To explore the theme of youth, based on its sociological understanding and reflection on the reality of young people in contemporary society. The project will also seek to stimulate collaboration and teamwork, as well as the development of research, critical analysis and communication skills.

Detailed project description:

Form groups of 3 to 5 students and choose a subtheme related to Youth to explore, for example, "Youth and Education", "Youth and Employment", "Youth and Violence", "Youth and Social Media", among others.

The groups should do an in-depth research on the chosen subtheme, using reliable and diverse sources, such as books, academic articles, official documents, statistics, reports, etc.

Based on the research carried out, each group should create a presentation (it can be a slide, a video, a poster, etc.) explaining the main points and reflections on the subtheme, from a sociological perspective. It is important that the presentation also includes the contextualization of the subtheme and its implications for the current Brazilian reality.

In addition, the groups will have to write a report of up to 4 pages on the subtheme. The report should include an Introduction, the Development, the Conclusion and the Bibliography used.

Materials needed:

• Books, academic articles, official documents, statistics, reports for research.
• Computer for creating the presentation and writing the report.

Detailed step-by-step to carry out the activity:

1. Form the groups and choose the subtheme they wish to explore.
2. Conduct in-depth research on the chosen subtheme. Write down the main information and organize it by relevance.
3. From the collected information, elaborate the presentation. Remember to include the contextualization of the subtheme, the main sociological discussions about it and its implications for the current Brazilian reality.
4. Write the report, following the proposed structure. In the Introduction, contextualize the subtheme, highlight its relevance and the objective of the project. In the Development, explain the theory behind the subtheme, describe the activity carried out, the methodology used and present the main findings. In the Conclusion, return to the main points, highlight the learnings and conclude the reflection. In the Bibliography, list all the sources consulted.
5. Review the final work and send it to the teacher within the stipulated deadline.

Project Delivery:

At the end of the project, each group must deliver:

1. The presentation of the subtheme, in slide, video, poster or other format agreed with the teacher.
2. The written report, of up to 4 pages, following the proposed structure.

Both works must be well articulated and reflect the students' understanding of the subtheme, as well as their critical view and their ability to build a sociological reflection on youth.
