Context
Throughout our lives, we are constantly exposed to various forms of language. Whether through letters that make up words, or through sounds that these words and letters produce. Among them are the Alphabet and the Phonetic Alphabet, which make up the universe of linguistics.
The Alphabet, also known as the ABCs, is a writing system of Phoenician origin, consisting of letters and used in numerous languages, including our Portuguese language, which has 26 letters. Important for the construction of words and sentences, the Alphabet is one of the first things we learn in life and accompanies us throughout our existence.
On the other hand, the Phonetic Alphabet is a phonetic transcription system that allows representing speech sounds through symbols. It was established by the International Phonetic Association and is widely used to describe the sounds of any human language. Phonetic transcription accurately represents the characteristics of sounds, information that is often absent in conventional writing.
In the modern world, the ability to read, write, and pronounce words correctly is essential for effective communication. The Alphabet and the Phonetic Alphabet are indispensable tools for developing these skills. In a professional context, for example, they are very useful for communicating information clearly, whether at a local or global level.
Furthermore, understanding the letters and sounds of the Portuguese language can help in learning foreign languages, expanding opportunities for study, work, and cultural exchange. Therefore, this project aims to explore and deepen knowledge about these two relevant aspects of language.
The following resources are recommended to deepen knowledge on the subject:
- Lesson on the Alphabet in Portuguese (YouTube)
- Lesson on the International Phonetic Alphabet (YouTube)
- Scientific Article: The International Phonetic Alphabet and the consonants of Brazilian Portuguese
- The Portuguese Alphabet (Brazil School)
Practical Activity: "Alphabet Operation"
Project Objective
The objective of this project is to provide students with the opportunity to explore the Alphabet and the Phonetic Alphabet in depth, connecting knowledge of the Portuguese language and linguistics, as well as stimulating teamwork, effective communication, and problem-solving.
Detailed Project Description
Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will be tasked with planning and executing a didactic activity involving the Alphabet and the Phonetic Alphabet to present to a class of students in the Lower Secondary Education. This activity can be, for example, a game, a playful activity, a song, or any other teaching strategy that the students consider appropriate. The planned didactic activity should be challenging enough for the Lower Secondary Education class, but it should also be fun and engaging.
Required Materials
- Resources for research on the Alphabet and the Phonetic Alphabet (books, videos, web pages, etc.)
- Materials for the realization of the didactic activity (varies according to the teaching strategy chosen by the group)
- Resources for recording and/or presenting the activity (camera, video editing software, etc., if necessary)
Detailed Step-by-Step
- Groups of 3 to 5 students are formed.
- Each group conducts in-depth research on the Alphabet and the Phonetic Alphabet, using the recommended resources and others they consider relevant.
- After understanding the concepts, each group discusses and decides what type of didactic activity they will create to teach the Alphabet and the Phonetic Alphabet to a Lower Secondary Education class.
- The group plans and executes its didactic activity, which may include creating materials, recording videos, preparing a script for a presentation, etc.
- After the activity is carried out, the group prepares a detailed report on their project, describing their process, discussing the challenges faced and the solutions found, evaluating the effectiveness of their activity, and reflecting on what they learned from the experience.
Project Deliverables
At the end of the project, students must deliver:
-
The didactic activity created, in the form it was planned (for example, a video, a game, a presentation script, etc.).
-
A written report, divided into four main sections:
- Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, relevance and real-world application, project objective.
- Development: Theory of the Alphabet and the Phonetic Alphabet, detailed description of the activity, methodology used, and results obtained.
- Conclusions: Recap of the main points of the project, lessons learned, conclusions about the project.
- Bibliography: Indication of all information sources used during the project.
The report writing should be done in a cohesive and coherent manner, with appropriate and precise language. Students should aim to express their processes, discoveries, and conclusions clearly and objectively, connecting the practice of the didactic activity with the theoretical concepts studied, and demonstrating how teamwork allowed the development of their technical and socio-emotional skills.
