The Portuguese language is quite rich and complex, presenting a great diversity and flexibility in the ways of constructing and transforming words. This occurs mainly through the processes of word formation, which allow the creation of new words and the enrichment of the lexicon. Understanding these processes is fundamental for the comprehension of linguistic structures and for the expansion of vocabulary.

Word formation processes are mainly divided into two major groups: syntactic processes and morphological processes. Syntactic processes involve the combination of words to form new units, while morphological processes involve the addition, removal, or exchange of morphemes (the smallest unit of meaning in a language) in a word.

Studying word formation is not only a challenging and enriching academic activity, but it also has very useful practical applications. In everyday life, the ability to understand and use word formation properly can help improve writing and reading skills, facilitate the learning of foreign languages, and even enhance reasoning and problem-solving skills.

Word formation is intrinsic to the expression and comprehension of the feelings, ideas, and knowledge that one wishes to convey. The ability to use it properly is therefore crucial for effective communication. Furthermore, the ability to understand word formation can be extremely useful in various careers, such as teaching, translation, linguistics, literature, journalism, advertising, law, among others.

Activity Title: Building Words - A Multidisciplinary Word Formation Game

Project Objective

The purpose of this project is to provide a deeper understanding of word formation processes in the Portuguese language, such as derivation, composition, hybridism, reduction, etc., through a playful and collaborative activity. By the end of the project, students should be able to identify and apply these processes in the construction of new words. Additionally, we will integrate the History discipline to understand how the Portuguese language has evolved and transformed over time.

Detailed Project Description

The work consists of creating and developing an educational game about word formation. In this game, students will create words from morphemes, roots, and prefixes/suffixes and classify them according to the type of formation (derivation, composition, etc.). The game will also involve historical aspects about the evolution of the Portuguese language, stimulating interdisciplinary connections.

This project is intended for groups of 3 to 5 students and has an approximate duration of 12 hours per student, including research, planning, creation, experimentation, and report writing.

Required Materials

• Paper cards, colored pens, post-its;
• Digital materials for creating an online version of the game (optional);
• Research material: books, internet, videos, etc.

Detailed Step-by-Step

1. Research and Planning (3 hours): Each group will conduct research on word formation and the history of the Portuguese language. After the research, the group should plan the game, deciding on the rules, objectives, and overall design of the game.

2. Game Creation (3 hours): Based on the planning, the groups should start creating the game. Cards with roots, prefixes, and suffixes should be created, as well as category cards to classify the types of word formation. Optionally, the group can create a digital version of the game.

3. Game Testing and Adjustment (2 hours): The groups should test the game, observing if the objectives are being achieved and if there is a need for adjustments in the rules or game design.

4. Playing and Learning (2 hours): After adjustments, each group will present the game to the class, and everyone will have the chance to play. During the game, students can put into practice what they have learned about word formation and the history of the Portuguese language.

5. Report Writing (2 hours): Finally, each group should write a detailed report on the project, presenting the concepts learned, the game description, the results of the experimentation, and the conclusions.

In the conclusion, students should summarize the main points and reflect on what they have learned from the project. The bibliography should contain all sources used for the work.
