Communication Process

Contextualization

Communication is the process of exchanging information and feelings between two or more people, through a set of semantic rules and shared symbols. There are several ways to communicate, whether verbally, non-verbally, in writing, or digitally. Effective communication is fundamental in all spheres of life, whether at school, work, home, or in social relationships.

Our project 'The Communication Process' aims to develop effective communication skills, understanding of communication theory, as well as the importance of teamwork and collaboration.

Importance of Communication

Communication is one of the most important skills you can possess. Ensuring that the message you are conveying is received and understood successfully is a skill that can be learned and improved.

Effective communication can help promote and maintain relationships, prevent misunderstandings, increase productivity, and create an environment of respect and understanding. Lack of communication skills can lead to conflicts, frustration, and low self-esteem.

For this study, we recommend some of the following research sources in Portuguese:

  1. What is Communication by Roman Jakobson. This book is a mandatory reference in the field of Communication and Linguistics.
  2. The website 'Comunica Simples', which addresses various communication-related topics in an easy and didactic way.
  3. TED Ed videos can also be a reference platform for discussions on the subject. Especially, 'The Art of Communication'.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Communication in Action - A Practical Journey through the Communication Process

Project Objective

Creation of a short theatrical piece (15 to 20 minutes) that explores different forms of communication and their effects on interpersonal relationships. In addition, students should investigate communication theory and put it into practice in the context of the theatrical piece. This should lead to a deeper understanding of the communication process, improvement of communication skills, and teamwork.

Detailed Project Description

Student groups should work together to create a theater piece in this activity. This piece should revolve around various forms of communication, including verbal, non-verbal, written, and digital. The development of the script for the piece should involve the group's research on communication theory and the application of the concepts learned.

In the piece, students should explore various situations where different forms of communication are used, demonstrating the consequences of effective and ineffective communication. After the presentation of the piece, the group should lead a discussion on the lessons learned and reflections from the piece, connecting them back to communication theory.

Required Materials

  • Access to online research (Internet)
  • Writing materials (Pens, pencils, paper)
  • Filming equipment (optional, if you wish to make a video of the piece)
  • Set and costume materials (can be simple and creative, using what is available)

Project Step by Step

  1. Gather your group and discuss initial ideas for the piece. Think about situations that could illustrate different forms of communication and their consequences.

  2. Research communication theory and how communication affects relationships. Use the sources suggested in the 'Contextualization' section as a starting point.

  3. Based on your research and discussion, start drafting the script for the piece. Each group member should equally contribute to this task.

  4. Review the script together, making adjustments as necessary.

  5. Rehearse the piece several times, assigning specific roles to each member (actors, directors, camerapersons, etc.)

  6. Present the piece to the class and lead a discussion on the lessons learned and reflections.

  7. Finally, each group should prepare a detailed report explaining the process of creating the piece, the communication theories explored, the challenges encountered, and the lessons learned.

End of Project and Delivery

Students will present the theatrical piece and lead the subsequent discussion. The activity should be completed with the preparation of a written report that describes in detail the process of creating the piece, the communication theory explored, the methodology used, discussion of the results obtained, and the bibliography used in the project.

The report should contain four main parts:

  1. Introduction: Provide context on the theme of communication, its relevance and real-world application, and the project's objective.
  2. Development: Describe in detail the communication theory, explain the theatrical piece and the subsequent discussion, indicate the methodology used, and present and discuss the results.
  3. Conclusions: Summarize the main points of the project, the lessons learned, and conclusions about the project.
  4. Bibliography: List the bibliographic sources used for the project.

By the end of the project, students should have gained a deeper understanding of the communication process, improved their communication and teamwork skills, and applied theoretical communication concepts in a practical, engaging, and collaborative activity.
