Context

Literature has always been a crucial tool for understanding different historical and social periods. It not only reports the events of a certain time, but it also reflects the social, political, and cultural issues in force. In this sense, literature often sets out to denounce situations of injustice and social inequality, allowing the reader to rethink their reality and, perhaps, to be motivated to act.

The authors present, through their writing, a critique of society and its current values. Through the characterization of characters and settings, the exposition of conflicts, and the development of plots, the writer can question old beliefs and call attention to problems often ignored or minimized by the public.

It is important to remember that literature is not only an artistic manifestation, but also a space for debating ideas and reflecting on the world we live in. This capacity for denunciation and criticism is what makes literature such a powerful and relevant tool in society.

Literature as a social denunciation is an extremely relevant theme, since it allows us to reinterpret texts under a new perspective and understand the importance of the author and the historical context in the construction of literary works. This critical perspective is essential for a deeper and more enriching reading, which goes beyond mere entertainment and leads us to question the reality in which we are inserted.

This project aims to investigate how authors use literature as a means of social denouncement, comparing works from different periods and contexts. The focus will be on literary texts in Portuguese, but it will also be interesting to observe how this phenomenon occurs in different cultures and languages.

As a basic resource for this project, I suggest consulting the book "Literatura e Sociedade" by Antônio Cândido, which discusses the relations between literature and social reality. In addition, the "Domínio Público" website provides an extensive list of free literary works, which can be used for analysis and comparison. To delve deeper into the theme, the documentary "Literatura e Sociedade," available on YouTube, presents interviews with various authors about the role of literature in social denunciation.

Practical Activity

Activity title: "Literature Out Loud: a social denunciation"

Project objective: to explore literature as a means of social denunciation, interpreting and presenting a play based on literary texts.

Detailed project description:

This project consists of selecting literary works that serve as a social denouncement, studying them, and, finally, adapting them for a small play. Students should work in groups of 3 to 5 people, looking for literary texts that portray and criticize social aspects. After analyzing the texts, each group should choose a work and adapt it for a play.

Necessary materials: books, internet access for research, and materials for the play's setting and costumes (paper, pencils, fabrics, etc. depending on each group's creativity).

Detailed step-by-step to carry out the activity:

1. Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.

2. Each group should select a literary work, preferably Brazilian, that contemplates a social problem. This work can be a short story, poem, chronicle, or even an excerpt from a novel.

3. Students should study the chosen work, identifying the social problem portrayed and the way the author presents it. During this stage, the main ideas, characters, and passages of the work should be noted.

4. Based on the analysis, the group should create a script for a play that represents the social problem that the literary work denounces. The play should be short, lasting 10 to 15 minutes, and the characters should be played by the group members.

5. Each group should rehearse the play, preparing the setting and costumes, and improving the interpretations.

6. After the rehearsals, the groups should present the plays to the class, preferably on a single day dedicated to these presentations.

7. After presenting the play, each group should prepare a written report, according to the guidelines below.

The project deliverable consists of the presentation of the play and the preparation of the written report.

• In the report, students should detail the chosen literary work and the social problem that it addresses (Introduction), explain their approach to creating and preparing the play (Development), discuss how literature makes the social denouncement and reflect on the learning obtained from the project (Conclusions) and reference all works and any other resources used (Bibliography).

The report should be organized as follows:

1. Introduction: Description of the chosen literary work, identification of the author and the social problem addressed in the work. Explanation of why the work was chosen and the relevance of the social problem portrayed in it.

2. Development: Detailed description of the process of analyzing the literary text, creating the script, and preparing the play. Any difficulties encountered and the strategies adopted to overcome them should be mentioned.

3. Conclusions: Reflection on how literature makes the social denouncement and on what was learned from the project. One should reflect on the importance of literature as a means of social denouncement and talk about the main lessons learned from the project.

4. Bibliography: References to all works and resources used throughout the project.

The report should be submitted one week after the presentation of the play. In addition to exploring literature as a social denouncement, this project seeks to develop students' skills in collaboration, communication, critical and creative thinking, and time management.
