Contextualization
Teaching Spanish is much more than just internalizing grammar rules and sentence structures. It is embarking on a cultural journey, immersing oneself in a universe rich in traditions, customs, and people. With that in mind, this project is focused on one of the most powerful topics when it comes to learning a new language: vocabulary related to travel and means of transportation. Why is it important to know this vocabulary? Simple, because traveling is an incredible opportunity to connect with the culture and language we are learning.
Learning a new language is like a journey, during which we collect new ways to express our ideas and feelings. In each new adventure, a world of words and expressions is discovered, allowing us to get to know and understand the people and cultures that use that language. By learning the vocabulary of travel and means of transportation, we are preparing ourselves to deal with everyday situations in Spanish-speaking countries, such as asking for information, buying tickets, or talking about our travel plans.
Practical Activity
Activity Title: "Lost in the City: A Journey through Means of Transportation"
Project Objective: To expand students' vocabulary regarding travel and means of transportation in Spanish, as well as to develop teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and creative thinking skills.
Detailed Project Description:
Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will have the mission of creating an engaging and fun story of a trip through the city, where the characters get lost and need to communicate only in Spanish to find their way back. The story should include different means of transportation and travel-related situations, exploring as much vocabulary as possible.
Materials Needed:
Access to the internet for vocabulary research, paper and pen for drafting the story script, and resources for recording and editing the audio or video of the story (can be a smartphone, computer, editing software, etc.).
Detailed Step-by-Step:
- Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.
- Each group should discuss and plan their story, writing a script that includes various travel situations and means of transportation.
- Students will research the necessary vocabulary for their stories using the suggested resources.
- With the script ready, students should record their story. It can be in audio, or if they prefer, in video.
- After recording, the group will review to check the correctness of the vocabulary and pronunciation.
- Finally, the groups will present their stories to the class.
Project Deliverables:
The deliverables of this project are the recorded story and the written report.
The report should include the following topics:
- Introduction: The student must contextualize the theme, its relevance, and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project.
- Development: Here, the group must explain the story they created in detail, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the challenges encountered and the solutions adopted. It should also indicate the vocabulary that was learned during the project.
- Conclusion: The group must conclude the work by summarizing its main points, explaining the learnings obtained, and drawing conclusions about the project.
- Bibliography: The group must indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.
Each group member will be responsible for a part of the report to ensure that everyone contributes equally. Remember that, although each one writes a part, it is important that everyone is aware of and agrees with what will be presented.
