Introduction

In this project, we will explore and understand the process of assigning meaning to verbal texts - a fundamental skill not only for the discipline of Portuguese, but also in the various forms of interaction in our society. Mastering this topic allows us not only to unravel the hidden meanings in texts, but also to contribute to improving our writing, reading, and argumentation skills.

Verbal texts are one of the main forms of human expression and communication. They are present in books, websites, everyday conversations, newspapers, magazines, songs, and many other means. Understanding them allows for the proper interpretation of the message the author intends to convey. Verbal text is rich and complex, involving not only words, but also syntax, semantics, phonetics, and pragmatics.

For a deeper understanding, we must carefully analyze the elements that make up verbal text. This includes semantics (the study of meaning), pragmatics (the study of how context influences meaning), and syntax (the study of sentence structure). Additionally, we must take into account factors such as the author's intention, the target audience, the historical and cultural context, among others.

Contextualization

We live in a world flooded with texts of all kinds, whether in digital or printed format. Assigning meaning to verbal texts is an essential skill to interpret and understand the world around us. It helps us understand news, announcements, messages on social networks, instructions, contracts, among many others.

Furthermore, this competence is also fundamental for our active participation in society. It provides the ability to express our points of view, argue, debate, persuade, and inform. It makes us more conscious consumers and better-informed citizens.

Activity

Activity Title: Exploring Meanings in Various Verbal Texts

Project Objective

This project aims to apply the concepts of semantics, pragmatics, and syntax in various verbal texts to understand how we assign meaning to them. Additionally, the project will also involve the discipline of History to understand the historical and cultural context of the selected texts.

Detailed Project Description

Groups, consisting of 3 to 5 students, should select five different types of verbal texts: a news article, a poem, a song, an advertisement, and an excerpt from a book.

For each text, the groups must:

• Identify and analyze the semantics, pragmatics, and syntax present;
• Research and understand the historical and cultural context in which the text was produced;
• Explore the author's intention and the target audience;
• Discuss and record the different interpretations the text may have.

The discussion and results of these analyses should be recorded and presented clearly and comprehensively.

Required Materials

For the completion of this project, groups will need:

• Accessibility to various text sources: books, newspapers, magazines, social media, news websites, etc.;
• Computer or laptop with internet connection for research and document preparation;
• Portuguese and history textbooks.

Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity

1. Formation of groups of 3 to 5 students.
2. Selection of the five types of verbal texts.
3. Research and understanding of the historical and cultural context of each selected text.
4. Identification and analysis of the semantics, pragmatics, and syntax of each text.
5. Discussion and recording of the different interpretations the text may have.
6. Writing the written document.

Project Deliverables

After completing the practical activity, groups must submit a written report, divided into the following topics:

1. Introduction: In this part, students must contextualize the theme, its relevance, and application in the real world, as well as the objective of this project.

2. Development: Here, students must explain the theory behind the central themes of the project. Additionally, they must explain the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained.

3. Conclusions: Students must summarize their main points, explaining the learnings obtained and the conclusions drawn from the project.

4. Bibliography Used: Students must indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

This report will serve not only as the final project deliverable but also as a learning tool that can be consulted by students in the future. It is where students will consolidate and demonstrate all the learning obtained throughout the project.

The project duration is estimated at over twelve hours per participating student.
