Introduction to Literary Studies: Reading Experiences

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Exploring the World of Literature: A Journey through Literary Genres"

Project Objective:

Understand and analyze different literary genres, exploring their characteristics, relevant authors, and emblematic works, and apply this knowledge in creating a presentation and writing a report.

Project Description:

In this project, groups will be responsible for choosing and studying a literary genre. They will research the genre's characteristics, identify relevant authors and works, and analyze how narrative elements manifest in the chosen works. The groups will then create a presentation to share their findings with the class and write a detailed report.

Necessary Materials:

  • Internet access for research
  • Books and texts of the chosen literary genre
  • Materials for creating the presentation (computer, presentation software, paper, pens, etc.)

Step-by-Step:

  1. Group Formation: Students must organize themselves into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will be responsible for choosing a literary genre to study and analyze.

  2. Research: Research the chosen genre, gathering information about its characteristics, history, notable authors, and emblematic works.

  3. Analysis of Literary Works: Choose at least two representative works of the genre to be read and analyzed by the group. Identify and comment on the narrative elements present (plot, characters, time, space, narrator, language) and how the genre's characteristics manifest in these works.

  4. Preparation of the Presentation: Create a presentation that synthesizes the gathered information and analyses. The presentation should include an introduction to the literary genre, a description of the analyzed works, the conclusions of the analysis, and a brief reflection on the reading experience.

  5. Report Writing: Each group must produce a report in the format of an academic article documenting the entire research and analysis process. The report should be organized into four main sections: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

    • Introduction: Provide context for the chosen literary genre, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project.

    • Development: Explain the theory behind the chosen literary genre, detail how the group carried out the activity (including the selection of works and the analysis methodology), and present and discuss the results obtained.

    • Conclusions: Summarize your main points, explaining the learnings obtained and the conclusions drawn from the project.

    • Bibliography: List the sources used for the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

  6. Presentation and Discussion: Each group will present their findings to the class. After each presentation, there will be time for questions and discussions.

It is estimated that each student will spend between five and ten hours on this project, including research time, reading, group discussions, presentation creation, and report writing. The final submission (presentation and report) should be made within one month of the project's start.
