Two of these main word formation processes are derivation and composition. Derivation occurs when a word is formed from another by adding an affix (prefix, suffix, infix). Composition occurs when two or more words come together to form a new one. These concepts are essential for a better understanding and use of our language.

Importance of Study

The study of word formation contributes not only to success in writing and reading but also to a better appreciation and effective use of the language. Linguistic competence is an essential skill in all spheres of life. It allows us to communicate effectively, express our ideas and feelings, understand and interpret the world around us.

Furthermore, knowledge of word formation is a critical skill for learning other languages. Understanding the formation and structure of words in Portuguese can help in decoding and understanding words in similar languages, such as Spanish, Italian, French, among others.

Practical Activity - 'Forming Words: A Journey through the Portuguese Language'

Objective

The project aims to enhance students' knowledge and understanding of the processes of derivation and composition in word formation in Portuguese, through a practical and collaborative work.

Activity Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will be responsible for developing an informative guide on the theme 'Word Formation Processes.' The guide should consist of:

1. An introductory section that explains the concepts of derivation and composition, as well as presenting the importance of studying word formation.

2. Followed by sections for each type of derivation (prefixal, suffixal, parasynthetic, regressive, and improper) and composition (by juxtaposition and agglutination), including detailed information on each process, along with practical examples and illustrations to facilitate understanding.

3. A final section in which the group must apply the concepts learned by creating a list of words based on each of the studied processes. Each word in the list must be accompanied by an example sentence that highlights the correct use of the word.

Required Materials

There is no need for specific materials. The guide can be created in a text document, for example, on Google Docs, and should contain illustrative images, which can be found on the internet, in books, or magazines.

Activity Step-by-Step

1. Divide students into groups of 3 to 5 members.
2. Students should research the topic, using the suggested resources and any other reliable material.
3. Each group should create a guide with sections for each type of derivation and composition, in addition to an introductory section and a final section with the list of words.
4. It is suggested that the group divide the work among its members, with each being responsible for one or two sections of the guide.
5. The group should meet regularly to discuss the progress of the work and make adjustments as necessary.
6. In the end, the group should compile all parts of the guide into a single document, which should be reviewed and edited by all group members.
7. The activity will last for one month, and at the end of this period, each group will present their guide to the class and submit the document for the teacher's evaluation.

Project Delivery

The final product to be delivered is an informative guide that presents clearly and in detail the processes of word formation. The guide should be written in a way that is accessible to anyone interested in learning about the topic.

After completing the project, students should also write a detailed report, which includes:

• Introduction: The student should contextualize the topic, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project.
• Development: The student should explain the theory behind the central theme(s) of the project, detail the activity, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained.
• Conclusion: The student should conclude the work by summarizing its main points, explaining the learnings obtained, and drawing conclusions about the project.
• Bibliography: The student should indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

The project delivery aims to consolidate the knowledge acquired by students during the activity, stimulate critical thinking, and the expression of ideas in a coherent and structured way.
