Contextualization
The study of Portuguese is divided into several categories, one of which is Phonetics. In this unit, we will specifically explore the phoneme /z/ and how it can be represented by different letters: s, z, or x. This theme is important not only for our understanding of the Portuguese language but also for our ability to communicate effectively and correctly.
The Portuguese language is rich and complex, with several rules and exceptions. Spelling is one of the aspects that can cause confusion, but it is crucial for understanding written texts and for effective communication. One of the particularities that can be challenging is the representation of the phoneme /z/ which can vary between s, z, and x.
Understanding this unique characteristic of Portuguese is essential for the correct writing of words. Words like 'exercício' (exercise), 'presidente' (president), and 'fazenda' (farm) have the same phoneme /z/, but are written with different letters. This can be confusing, especially for those who are learning the language. Therefore, we want to deepen the study of this linguistic phenomenon to assist in improving correct writing.
The concepts of phonemes and their different representations do not only apply to writing and reading but also influence our speech and hearing. Mastering these rules helps us to express ourselves more clearly and to better understand others. It is a practical knowledge that goes beyond the classroom.

Practical Activity: 'In search of the phoneme /z/: a linguistic exploration'
Project Objectives
- Understand how the phoneme /z/ can be represented by s, z, or x in different words in Portuguese.
- Develop research and linguistic analysis skills.
- Improve writing and correct spelling according to the standard norm.
- Encourage teamwork, collaboration, and task division.
Detailed Project Description
Groups will have to search for words in Portuguese that represent the phoneme /z/ through the letters s, z, and x. Each group will have to find at least 20 examples for each letter (a total of 60 words). In addition, students should analyze the usage patterns of these letters to represent the phoneme /z/ and explain their observations.
Required Materials
- Access to the internet and/or grammar and spelling books for research.
- Notebook or paper for notes.
- Pens and pencils.
- Optionally, use of presentation software for the final report.
Step by Step
-
Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students and explain the activity in detail.
-
Ask each group to find 20 words for each letter (s, z, x) that represent the phoneme /z/ - totaling, therefore, 60 words.
-
In addition to the list of words, students should observe the usage patterns of these letters in written Portuguese and seek grammatical justifications for such patterns.
-
The students should then organize themselves to write a report documenting their findings.
-
The report should be divided into four parts: Introduction, Development, Conclusion, and Bibliography.
- Introduction: Provide context for the theme and explain the importance of this project.
- Development: First, explain the theory of the phoneme /z/ represented by s, z, or x. Then, describe the activity carried out, the methodology used by the group, and the results obtained. Discuss the patterns found and the possible grammatical explanations for these patterns.
- Conclusion: Summarize the main points of the work, explaining the knowledge acquired and the conclusions drawn from the project.
- Bibliography: Indicate the research sources used.
-
Upon completion, the groups should submit the written report for evaluation by the teacher.
This project has a duration of approximately one month - enough time for research, group discussions, and preparation of the final report.
Project Submission
Students must submit a list of 60 words that represent the phoneme /z/ - 20 for each letter: s, z, and x - along with the detailed written report following the guidelines mentioned above.
It is expected that this project will provide students with a deeper understanding of the Portuguese language and its phonetic aspects, enhancing their writing and comprehension skills. Additionally, the project aims to develop important competencies such as teamwork, time management, problem-solving, and critical-analytical thinking.
