Reading: Attribution of Meanings

Contextualization

Reading is an essential and powerful tool in our society. It is through reading that we communicate, learn, grow, and even have fun. Understanding its role is fundamental to better comprehend the world around us. In this project, we will explore the idea that "reading is assigning meanings".

The phrase "reading is assigning meanings" suggests that reading is not a passive process, but a creative act. When we read, we are not simply absorbing information, but interpreting, questioning, and making connections with our own knowledge and experiences. In other words, we read to understand, and this understanding is highly individual and contextual.

Furthermore, reading is a process of constructing meanings that encompasses not only the text but also the context in which it is inserted. When we read, we use our personal repertoire, composed of our previous knowledge, experiences, feelings, and emotions to assign meanings to the text. Therefore, each reading is unique, as each reader is unique.

As can be seen, reading is a complex cognitive activity that involves several critical skills. It is not surprising, therefore, that the ability to read well - not only to decipher the words on the page but to understand, analyze, and evaluate what they mean - is a key skill in many careers and in all areas of life.

But the importance of reading goes beyond its practical utility. Reading can also be a source of pleasure, adventure, and emotion. It can transport us to places and times we have never known, make us laugh or cry, make us think deeply about important issues. And, perhaps most importantly, reading can help us better understand ourselves and others.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Interpreting the World: A Reading Journey"

Project Objective

This project aims to help students understand the importance of reading and how it is fundamental for interpreting the world, assigning diverse meanings and significances. Additionally, it seeks to promote collaboration and interaction among students, developing socio-emotional skills such as communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and time management.

Detailed Project Description

This activity will be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group will be tasked with reading and analyzing a fiction book. After reading and discussing, the group will create a multimedia narrative (can be a video, podcast, presentation, or theatrical piece) that reflects their interpretation of the work.

Necessary Materials

  1. Selected fiction book for each group.
  2. Material for video recording, audio, or presentation creation according to each group's choice.
  3. Computers with Internet access.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Book Selection: The teacher will suggest a list of books that students can choose for analysis. The book choice should be made by consensus within the group.

  2. Book Reading: Students will have a deadline set by the teacher to read the book and make personal notes on the aspects that most catch their attention.

  3. Group Discussion: After reading, students should gather (in person or virtually) to discuss the book and share their interpretations.

  4. Narrative Creation: The group will then create a multimedia narrative that reflects their interpretations.

  5. Review and Refine: The group should review and refine their project, ensuring it aligns with the concept of "reading is assigning meanings".

  6. Final Presentation: Finally, each group will present their narrative to the class, explaining how it reflected their interpretations of the book. After each presentation, there will be time for questions and discussions.

Project Delivery

At the end of the project, each group must:

  1. Submit their multimedia narrative.

  2. Write a report containing:

    • Introduction: introduction to the chosen book, justification for the choice, and relevance.
    • Development: theoretical discussion on reading and assigning meanings, detailed explanation of the narrative creation process, highlighting the decisions made based on group discussions and studied theoretical perspectives.
    • Conclusion: reflection on what they learned from the project, the challenges, discoveries, and benefits of teamwork.
    • Bibliography: references of consulted resources, including the book used, websites, videos, articles, etc.

This project is multidisciplinary and will be worked on in both Portuguese and Arts classes. In Portuguese, students will develop their reading skills, text interpretation, writing, and report elaboration. In Arts, they will work on creating the multimedia narrative, exploring various forms of artistic expression.

The project is expected to last three weeks, one for book reading, one for discussion and narrative creation, and one for review, finalization, and project presentation.
