Literature is an important expression of our culture and identity and plays a central role in shaping our understanding of the world. It allows us to experience unattainable realities, explore complex ideas, and connect with characters and settings we do not encounter in our daily lives.

Understanding and appreciating literature is an essential aspect of our education. When we read, we are transported to other places, other times, other mindsets. It is both a personal experience - a dialogue between the reader and the text - and an experience shared by all readers of that text.

Introduction

This project was created to introduce students to literary studies and reading experiences. The project focuses on four key concepts: the nature of literature, the elements that make up a literary text, the practice of text interpretation, and comparative analysis. Through this project, we aim to provide students with the opportunity to explore these concepts in a practical and engaging way.

The project is transdisciplinary, intersecting with the discipline of History, to allow students a deeper understanding of how literature and history are interconnected and how they mutually influence each other.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Literary Opinions of the Past and Present: A Journey through Reading and History

Project Objective:

This project aims to provide students with a practical experience in literary analysis, where they will investigate and compare the evolution of literature, its perceptions, and impacts from different historical and social contexts.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, and each group will be responsible for selecting two literary works from different historical periods. The chosen works must align with the High School Portuguese curriculum.

After selecting the works, the groups should conduct historical research on the contexts in which the works were written, seeking to understand which relevant events of that period may have influenced the writing and plot of the work.

Based on the understanding of the historical context, students should conduct a literary analysis of the works, identifying and commenting on the literary elements present in them, such as writing style, characters, plot, recurring themes, symbolism, among others.

To conclude the activity, students should perform a comparative analysis of the two works, connecting the historical context with the literary characteristics of each one, and formulate hypotheses about how each historical period influenced the construction and reception of these works.

Necessary Materials:

1. Selected books for analysis.
2. Online resources for historical and literary research.
3. Materials for note-taking and report preparation (paper, pens, computer, etc).

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

1. Form groups of 3 to 5 people.
2. Each group should choose two literary works from different historical periods.
3. Research the historical context of each chosen work.
4. Read the works and identify the literary elements present.
5. Conduct a literary analysis of each work based on your historical research.
6. Compare the two works and develop hypotheses about the impact of the historical context on their construction and reception.
7. Write a detailed report with Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

Project Deliverables:

Groups must submit a written report containing the following topics:

1. Introduction: Contextualization of the selected works, the relevance of studying literature in different historical periods, project objectives, and methodology used.

2. Development: A theoretical analysis of the works should be presented, including the historical research conducted, the interpretation and comparison of each work, and their literary differences and similarities.

3. Conclusions: Recapitulation of the initial objectives, lessons learned, results, and conclusions drawn throughout the project.

4. Bibliography: List of sources used in the project preparation, such as books, websites, videos, etc.

The written report is a fundamental part of this project. It should reflect the group's findings at each stage of the project, from the selection of works to the final analysis. Through this activity, students will be able to develop essential technical skills, such as analyzing texts, interpreting different worldviews, and understanding the relationship between literature and history. Additionally, they will also strengthen socio-emotional skills, such as time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity.
