Anaphora is when an element refers back to a term or concept that has already been mentioned earlier in the text. For example, 'Lucas loves ice cream. He always asks for it when he leaves home.' In this case, 'he' is a pronoun that refers back to 'Lucas'.

On the other hand, cataphora is when an element anticipates a term or concept that will be mentioned later in the text. For example, 'When he gets home, Lucas asks for ice cream.' Here, 'Lucas' is anticipated by the expression 'when he gets home'.

These concepts are fundamental to understanding the Portuguese language and the structure of texts. In practice, they are used all the time in our day-to-day communication, even if unconsciously.

Furthermore, they are a widely used resource in literature, news, advertising, among others. Understanding and correctly using these concepts is essential for reading and producing quality texts in a cohesive and coherent manner.

This activity aims to explore students' understanding of anaphoric and cataphoric relations, applying these concepts so present in everyday communication.

Detailed Activity Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, and each group will receive a book (or a book excerpt) assigned by the teacher. In this book, they should identify examples of the use of anaphoric and cataphoric relations, mark them, and create a 'reference map' demonstrating the structure of references within the text. Additionally, they should create their own text, strategically using anaphoric and cataphoric relations.

Required Materials

1. Book (or book excerpt) assigned by the teacher.
2. Paper and pen for notes or a text processing software.

Step by Step

1. First, each group should read the assigned book (or book excerpt), identifying and marking each example of anaphoric and cataphoric relations.

2. Next, students should create a 'reference map' that explains how anaphoric and cataphoric relations are structured in the text.

3. Then, each group should create their own text, using anaphoric and cataphoric relations strategically. This text should be related to the theme of the book or the book excerpt that was analyzed.
