Among the various phonemes in the Portuguese language, the phoneme /$/ is one of the most interesting due to its versatility, as it can be represented by the graphemes 'X' or 'CH'.

Understanding the functioning of phonemes is an essential skill not only for reading and writing, but also for understanding linguistic diversity and the dynamic nature of languages. Furthermore, this understanding is fundamental for mastering the standard norm of the Portuguese language, which requires the appropriate use of phonemes and graphemes in different contexts.

In this project, we will explore in detail the phoneme /$/, studying how it can be represented by the graphemes 'X' or 'CH', the rules and exceptions that govern this representation, and, finally, the importance of this knowledge for effective communication and compliance with the standard norm of the Portuguese language.

Importance of the Theme

We use language in our daily lives in various contexts, whether at school, work, personal relationships, media, among others. We communicate through words, which are composed of phonemes and graphemes. By understanding how phonemes work, we can improve our ability to write correctly, read fluently, and express ourselves clearly and effectively.

Furthermore, correct spelling of words is required in various formal situations, such as exams, contests, academic and professional work, corporate emails, among others. Therefore, mastering the concepts of phonemes and graphemes is an essential skill for academic, professional, and personal success.

Practical Activity: 'Phoneme Detectives'

Project Objective

The objective of this project is for students to identify, in various texts and in their own text production, the use of the phoneme /$/ and how it manifests through the graphemes X and CH. It also aims to enhance socio-emotional skills such as teamwork, effective communication, and time management.

Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group should select a literary, journalistic, advertising text, or any other genre, as long as it is in the Portuguese language. Using this text as a base, the group should search for words that have the phoneme /$/ represented by X or CH.

After identifying these words, students should categorize them, separating those that use X and those that use CH. Subsequently, students must create a glossary with all the identified words, defining meaning, origin, and usage in context.

The activity culminates in the production of a visually appealing infographic that explains the use of the phoneme /$/ and how it can be represented by the graphemes X and CH, illustrated with the words from the glossary. The infographic should have a clear, concise, and visually pleasing explanation to facilitate understanding of the content.

Necessary Materials

1. Texts in Portuguese of different genres
2. Paper and pencil or colored pens (for the draft)
3. Computer with internet access (for research and infographic development)
4. Infographic creation software (can be a free online tool like Canva)

Step by Step

1. Division of students into groups of 3 to 5 members.
2. Selection of a text in Portuguese to be analyzed by the group.
3. Reading and analysis of the text to identify words that have the phoneme /$/ represented by X or CH.
4. Creation of a list with the identified words, separating them according to the grapheme that represents the phoneme /$/.
5. Research on the meaning, origin, and usage in context of each word on the list.
6. Creation of a glossary with the identified words and their respective information.
7. Development of an infographic that explains the use of the phoneme /$/ and how it can be represented by the graphemes X and CH, using the words from the glossary as examples.

Project Delivery

Students must present the produced infographic and deliver the glossary with the identified words. The infographic and glossary should be compiled into a single document to be submitted to the teacher.

Additionally, the group should prepare a report following the established guidelines, where the Introduction should highlight the importance of the theme and the object of study, the Development should explain the theory of the phoneme /$/, the activity carried out, and the results obtained. The Conclusion should bring the learnings and reflections that the project provided, and the Bibliography section should list the sources consulted during the research.

Remembering that when writing the report, it is important to emphasize how the project activities helped understand the phoneme /$/, represented by X and CH, and how they illustrated the correct spelling of a word according to the standard norm.
