Language is incredibly diverse and complex. To communicate efficiently, we use various formats and structures, suitable for each situation. These different formats are called textual genres. In this project, you will explore this diversity and complexity, learning to identify and produce different genres.
Textual genres are categories of texts that share common characteristics regarding content, form, and use. Genres can be oral or written and present great diversity: narrative, descriptive, argumentative, instructive, among others.
Textual genres are important tools for our communication and understanding of the world. They help us organize and structure our thoughts, allow us to adapt our language according to the context, facilitate text comprehension, and enable us to express our ideas efficiently.
Importance of Textual Genres
The ability to identify and correctly use textual genres is essential not only in the school context - in the production of essays, summaries, or reports - but also in everyday life. When sending a formal email, for example, it is necessary to use a completely different textual genre than the one used in informal text messages.
Furthermore, knowledge of textual genres is essential for the critical reading of texts. By identifying a text's genre, we can anticipate its structure and purpose, facilitating its comprehension and allowing for a more critical and in-depth reading.
Practical Activity: The Theater of Textual Genres

The Theater of Textual Genres
Project Objective:
To explore and understand different textual genres in a practical and playful way, through the creation of a theatrical script, interpreting texts of different genres.
Detailed Project Description:
In this project, groups will create and perform in a theatrical play where each scene is written in a different textual genre. The students' task will not only be to create these scenes but also to identify the textual genre of each one and discuss its characteristics.
Each group must choose 5 textual genres, and for each one, a scene with text written in that genre must be created. The texts created will be the script of the play to be performed by the students at a school event.
Required Materials:
Each group will need pencils, paper, internet for research, rehearsal space, and materials for sets and costumes according to their creativity and availability.
Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:
- Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
- Each group must choose 5 textual genres to work on.
- For each chosen genre, the group must research, study its characteristics, and create a text in this format.
- With the created texts, the groups must create a script for the theatrical play, interconnecting the scenes in a coherent and interesting way.
- After the script is ready, the groups must rehearse the play, defining actors for the scenes, and prepare possible sets and costumes.
- Presentation of the play to the class and discussion about the explored textual genres.
Project Deliverables:
After the theatrical performance, each group must submit a report with the following topics:

Introduction: The group must contextualize the theme of textual genres, their relevance in communication, and the project's objective.

Development: The theory of what textual genres are, their importance, a detailed description of the activities carried out, and the methodology used should be presented. Here, the results obtained should also be presented and discussed.

Conclusion: In this section, students must summarize the main points of the work, explain the learnings obtained, and draw conclusions about the project.

Bibliography: Students must indicate all sources they relied on to work on the project.
This written document will be the final evaluation of the project, where students are expected to demonstrate their technical skills in text interpretation and production, as well as socio-emotional skills such as time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity.
