Contextualization
Our lives are permeated by written language, whether in creating a short text for a friend, answering a question on a test, or drafting a report at work. Therefore, it is essential to have a good understanding of the structure of our language for effective communication. In this sense, one of the elements that often causes confusion is the C Cedilla (Ç).
The C Cedilla is a typically Portuguese character, used to represent a /s/ sound before the vowels a, o, and u. It originates from the Latin alphabet and evolved from the letter C with a small decoration underneath, which was incorporated in the 9th century. Proper writing of this letter is fundamental for correct communication and understanding of words in our language, avoiding ambiguities and misunderstandings.
Theoretical Introduction
Portuguese, like all languages, has specific rules for the formation of its words that end up defining their meaning and contexts of use. The C Cedilla is an example of these peculiarities of our language. It was incorporated to enable the representation of a sound that could not be written correctly with the available letters.
It is important to understand that the letter Ç is not used in all words with a /s/ sound, but in specific cases. In general, the C Cedilla is used in words derived from Latin where 'c' precedes the vowels 'a', 'o', or 'u' and maintains the /s/ sound. Therefore, one of the tasks is to learn to distinguish when to use Ç and when to use S, C, or SS, which can represent the same sound.
Although it may seem complicated, practice and understanding of these rules help us to form a more fluent and correct writing, facilitating communication in our academic, professional, and personal life.
Practical Activity: The Journey of the C Cedilla
Project Objective
The objective of this project is the development of an educational computer game focused on the correct use of the C Cedilla (Ç) in Portuguese words. The game should be informative, interactive, and engaging, promoting teamwork and a playful approach to learning the Portuguese language.
Detailed Project Description
Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will have the task of creating a digital educational game focused on the correct use of the C Cedilla in Portuguese. For this, the game must contain challenges that involve:
- Recognition of the correct use of Ç in words.
- Differentiation between Ç and S, C, or SS in words with a /s/ sound.
- The influence of Ç on the semantics (meaning) of words.
Students must develop the game concept, including design, rules, challenges, story, and characters. In addition, they must plan and execute game development strategies, select and use appropriate digital resources, and ensure the effective integration of content, aesthetics, and functionality.
Required Materials
Students will need:
- Computers with Internet access for research and game development.
- Graphic design software, such as Adobe Photoshop or GIMP, for creating game art.
- A game development platform, such as Construct 3 or Scratch, for programming the game.
Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution
-
Research Phase: each group should initially research the origin, history, and functioning of the C Cedilla in Portuguese words. They should collect examples of words with the letter Ç and understand the rules of its use.
-
Game Conceptualization: based on the research conducted, the group should conceive the game idea, defining the characters, story, challenges, rules, and overall design.
-
Game Development: using graphic design and game development software, the groups should create and program the game. They must make sure to include elements that test players' knowledge of the correct use of Ç.
-
Game Testing: after completing development, the game should be tested by the group members themselves to verify that everything works as planned and that the game is truly educational and fun.
-
Delivery and Presentation: After testing and finalizing, each group should prepare a game presentation for the class, explaining the idea, rules, and challenges, as well as demonstrating a gameplay.
Project Deliverables
Each group must deliver the following:
-
Game: each group must deliver the complete digital educational game. It should be functional and bug-free.
-
Game Presentation: each group must present their game to the class.
-
Report: the report should contain the following topics:
- Introduction: contextualization of the use of the C Cedilla in the Portuguese language, its relevance and application in daily life, and the project proposal description.
- Development: this section should include the theoretical foundation, detailed description of the game (story, characters, challenges, rules), game development methodology, and test results.
- Conclusion: recap of key points, a reflection on the learning obtained, and project conclusions.
- Bibliography: references of materials used in the project.
