To better understand this role of literature, it is important to introduce some key theoretical concepts. The social sensitivity of the writer, the representation of reality in their texts, and the relationship between text and context are some of the points that should be studied. Furthermore, it is necessary to understand the concept of social denunciation and how it is presented in literature.
Social Sensitivity of the Writer
The writer is not an isolated entity, but a social being who lives in a specific historical-social context. Their literary production is influenced by their personal experiences, reflections, and interaction with the society in which they live. This social sensitivity of the writer, that is, their ability to perceive, absorb, and react to social reality, is a fundamental aspect for the literary creation of denunciation.
Representation of Reality
Literature is an artistic manifestation that seeks to represent reality, even if in a stylized or symbolic way. Through their characters, plots, and settings, the writer constructs a particular vision of life, society, and the world. This vision, however, is not neutral or impartial, but rather an interpretation loaded with values, opinions, and positions.
Text and Context
In literary analysis, it is essential to consider the relationship between the text (the literary work) and its context (the society and the time in which it was produced). The historical-social context can influence literary production in various ways, from the choice of themes to the language and structure of the text. Furthermore, the context can provide keys to understanding the author's intentions and criticisms.

Practical Activity
Activity Title: The Voice of Literature - Investigating Social Denunciation in Literary Works
Project Objective:
The purpose of this project is for student groups (3 to 5 members) to investigate and discuss the role of literature as a tool for social denunciation. To do this, they must choose a literary work that fits into this category and conduct a deep analysis of it, exploring the historical-social context of the work, the author's biography, the representation of reality in the literary text, and how social denunciation is present in the work.
The activity goes beyond the Portuguese discipline, also integrating History by exploring the historical context of the work, and Sociology by analyzing the social problems highlighted in the text.
With a duration of approximately one month, the project requires research, group discussion, and the elaboration of a written work. Each group member must contribute to the research, analysis, and writing of the text.
Required Material:
- Books and/or academic articles related to the chosen work and its historical-social context;
- Internet access for complementary research;
- Documents for note-taking and drafts;
- Software for writing and editing text (Microsoft Word, Google Docs, etc.).
Detailed Project Description:
Step 1: Choosing the Work
Groups must choose a literary work that represents a social denunciation. This choice must be justified, explaining why the work is considered a social denunciation. This justification will be the introduction to the final work.
Step 2: Research and Understanding of the Context
With the chosen work, groups conduct extensive research on the historical and social context in which it was produced and on the author's life. The idea is to understand how these aspects influenced the work.
Step 3: Analysis of the Work
After reading the work, students must analyze it deeply, identifying the elements that represent social denunciation. It is important to pay attention to everything: from the construction of the characters to the narrative structure.
Step 4: Writing the Work
Based on the research and discussions conducted, groups must write a paper, divided into four parts: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography. The introduction contains the justification for the choice of the work. The development explains the theory behind the theme, as well as the methodology used in the analysis, and presents and discusses the results obtained. The conclusion synthesizes the learnings and conclusions about the project. The bibliography lists the sources consulted during the project.
Step 5: Review and Submission
Groups review the work for error correction and improvements. After this review, the work is submitted to the teacher for evaluation.
Project Deliverables
The main product of this project is the written work, which must be submitted to the teacher in digital format. The document should demonstrate the theoretical concepts discussed in class, the critical analysis of the chosen work, and the application of these concepts in practice. With this project, the student must show that they are capable of understanding the literary work as a reflection and a critical commentary on the historical-social context. Furthermore, the written work should demonstrate research skills, analysis skills, writing skills, and teamwork.
