Formal and Informal Treatment

Contextualization

Formal and informal treatment holds great relevance in the communication process in the Spanish language. Different contexts demand a variety of approaches in the way people are treated, which can vary between a casual conversation among friends and a negotiation situation in a corporate environment.

In the Spanish language, this is represented through the use of the treatment pronouns 'tú' (informal) and 'usted' (formal), in addition to the corresponding changes in verbs. This project aims to provide an understanding of these differences and the practical application of this concept, helping in effective and respectful communication in various situations.

Introduction

Studying the treatment pronouns and their uses in the Spanish language requires a deeper understanding of Hispanic culture. It is a linguistic element that reflects the relationship between people and the level of formality or informality in interaction.

To communicate effectively in Spanish, it is essential to know when and how to use treatment pronouns correctly. Thus, the objective of this project is to explore the use of 'tú' and 'usted' pronouns, as well as the respective verbal treatment in different contexts.

Throughout this project, you will learn to identify when to use formal or informal treatment, understand the cultural connotations and implications behind these choices, and develop skills to apply this knowledge in the real and active use of the language.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'Treating Well in Spanish: Formal and Informal'

Project Objective

Develop the understanding and practical application of formal and informal treatment in the Spanish language, through the creation of dialogues considering different contexts and situations.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of three to five members. Each group must create three dialogues: one formal, one informal, and the third one blending both treatments. The dialogues should be set in different situations (for example, a meeting between friends, a job interview, a family gathering), allowing students to explore and apply the concepts of formality and informality in the Spanish language.

Required Materials

Paper and pen or a computer with a text editing program (Word, Google Docs, among others) for creating and recording the dialogues.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Formation of groups according to the teacher's guidance.

  2. Discussion within the group to define the situations in which the dialogues will be set.

  3. Research and study on the use of formal and informal treatment in Spanish, using the suggested resources and others found by the students.

  4. Joint creation of the dialogues. Each dialogue must have a minimum of 10 interactions (that is, 5 from each participant).

  5. Review of the created dialogues, adjusting the verbal treatment and pronouns according to the context.

  6. Preparation of a presentation for the class. Each group must dramatize the dialogues created.

  7. After the presentation, each group must prepare a report on the project carried out, following the format explained earlier (Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography).

  8. Submission of the report and group self-assessment.

Project Deliverables

Groups must deliver the following items:

  • Dialogues written in the Spanish language, reflecting the use of formal and informal treatments according to the situation.

  • Presentation of the dialogues to the class, aiming at oral practice of the language and effective application of the concepts learned.

  • Project report, written in Spanish, containing:

    1. Introduction: Contextualization of the theme and objectives of the work.
    2. Development: Detailed explanation of the process of creating the dialogues, the chosen contexts, and the application of the concepts of formal and informal treatment. It should also include the methodology used by the group for creating the dialogues and preparing for the presentation.
    3. Conclusions: Reflections on the learning obtained from the project, including the understanding of the use of formal and informal treatment in Spanish and the experience of working in a group.
    4. Bibliography: References of the materials consulted for the project.

These deliveries allow students to apply theory into practice, practice writing and speaking in the Spanish language, develop teamwork, and deepen the study of Hispanic culture.
