Stress Accent and Graphic Accent

Context

The Portuguese language is a complex system of symbolic meanings that reflects the rich history and culture of the people who speak it. Being a Romance language, it has several rules and grammatical constructions that can be challenging for speakers, especially when it comes to accentuation. In this sense, understanding tonic and graphic accents is essential to master written and spoken Portuguese.

Tonic and graphic accents are key elements of the Portuguese writing system. Tonic accents indicate the syllable that should be emphasized in the pronunciation of a word, while graphic accents are used to indicate how a word should be pronounced or to differentiate homonymous words. Both are fundamental for the correct understanding and expression of words.

Introduction

Accentuation is an essential part of language. It helps guide the pronunciation and interpretation of words and phrases, contributing to the clarity of communication. In Portuguese, tonic and graphic accents have distinct but equally important functions.

The tonic accent refers to the syllable in a word that is emphasized during speech. In Portuguese, this can fall on the last syllable (oxytone words), the penultimate syllable (paroxytone words), or the antepenultimate syllable (proparoxytone words). This accent is not necessarily explicitly marked in writing, but it is fundamental for the correct pronunciation of the word.

On the other hand, the graphic accent is the mark left in writing to indicate the presence of a tonic accent, or to differentiate homonymous words. This accent is what we see in words like 'lápis' (pencil), 'está' (is), or 'pôde' (could). It is essential for the understanding and correct application of Portuguese accentuation rules and, consequently, for good writing.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Unraveling the Accents!

Project Objective

To deepen and solidify students' knowledge of tonic and graphic accents, their importance, and correct usage in the Portuguese language. Additionally, to encourage collaboration, creative thinking, and time management through a group activity.

Detailed Project Description

Groups of 3 to 5 students will create an educational game that explores the themes of tonic and graphic accents. The game can be chosen by the students, as long as it involves questions and answers about the studied topics. The group must also create an instruction manual with the game rules.

Required Materials

  • Cardboards or A3 paper sheets
  • Colored pens, pencils, eraser
  • Blunt scissors
  • Glue
  • Internet access for research

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Completion

  1. Students divide into groups of 3 to 5 people and choose a game format (trivia, bingo, memory game, etc.).

  2. The group develops a set of questions and answers about tonic and graphic accents. The questions should cover key theoretical concepts, rules, and examples of applications.

  3. With the listed materials, the group creates the board, cards, or any physical element necessary for the game.

  4. Students create an instruction manual with the game rules.

  5. The group tests the game by playing a session. This moment should also be documented, either through photos, video, or a detailed description.

  6. Finally, the group creates a project report, explaining the game creation, step-by-step process, challenges encountered, and proposed solutions. This report should have the following sections: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

    • In the Introduction, the group should contextualize the theme, its relevance, real-world application, and explicitly state the project's objective.
    • In the Development, the group should explain the theory behind tonic and graphic accents, detailing the activity, indicating the methodology used, and presenting and discussing the results obtained.
    • In the Conclusions, the group should summarize the main points, explain the learnings obtained, and draw conclusions about the project.
    • In the Bibliography, the group should cite all sources of information used to work on the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, each group must deliver:

  1. The physical game created, ready to be played.
  2. The game instruction manual.
  3. Records of at least one gaming session (photos, video, or detailed description).
  4. The project report, discussing each stage of the game creation and demonstrating the understanding of the theoretical content.

We emphasize that, for the project evaluation, more than the final appearance of the game, the quality of the questions and answers created, the understanding of the concepts involved, and the demonstration of teamwork will be taken into consideration.
