Context

Vowels, consonants, and semivowels are the basis of any language, being essential for word formation and sentence construction. In Portuguese, these elements are fundamental constituents of the linguistic system and are present at all levels of the communication process.

Vowels are sounds produced by the passage of air through the vocal cords, without encountering any obstacles. Consonants, on the other hand, are sounds in which the air encounters some obstacle when passing through the oral cavity. Semivowels, in turn, are sounds that resemble vowels but are not as sonorous, acting together with vowels in the same syllable sound.

A deep understanding of the difference between these elements is crucial not only for the correct spelling and pronunciation of words but also forms the basis for understanding disciplines such as phonetics and phonology.

Introduction

The Portuguese language is formed by a set of sounds that are organized according to grammatical rules to convey information and express thoughts. In the process of forming these sounds, vowels, consonants, and semivowels play a fundamental role, being key elements that ensure effective communication among people.

Understanding the role and characteristics of each of these categories is, therefore, of great importance for anyone who wishes to have complete mastery of the language. This understanding not only allows for more correct verbal and written expression but also facilitates the learning of new words and the appreciation of the art of language, as in poetry, music, and literature.

In this project, we will deeply analyze vowels, consonants, and semivowels, explaining their characteristics, differences, and applications in our language. Additionally, we will explore practical activities that allow students to experience and further understand these important elements of our communication.

Practical Activity: "Vowel, Consonant & Semivowel: The Word Game"

Project Objective

The activity aims to review and strengthen the concepts learned about vowels, consonants, and semivowels, as well as to stimulate teamwork, creativity, and analytical thinking.

Activity Description

Each group will be tasked with creating a "Word Game" in which participants must form words according to the rules established by the students themselves. The rules should involve the specific use of vowels, consonants, and semivowels, stimulating the understanding of these elements.

Required Materials

• Cardboard
• Colored pens
• Post-its
• Ruler
• Scissors

Step by Step

1. Students should divide into groups of 3 to 5 participants.
2. Each group must create a name for their game.
3. On the cardboard, students should draw a path with several squares.
4. For each square on the path, a rule involving the use of vowels, consonants, and/or semivowels should be formulated. For example: "Form a word that starts with a consonant and ends with a semivowel."
5. After completing the board, students should write the game rules on a piece of paper and attach it next to the board.
6. Finally, each group should present their game to their peers, explain the rules, and demonstrate a round.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the activity, each group must deliver:

1. The game board, with the rules attached.
2. A report detailing the following:
   • Introduction: Contextualization of the importance of vowels, consonants, and semivowels in the Portuguese language and the objectives of this project.
   • Development: Here, the theory behind vowels, consonants, and semivowels should be explained in detail, describing the activity and the step-by-step process of how the game was created, the methodology used, and the results obtained, such as the practical application of this knowledge.
   • Conclusion: Students should conclude the work by summarizing the main points, emphasizing the learnings obtained from the project execution.
   • Bibliography Used: Students should indicate the sources they relied on to carry out the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

Each group will have one week to complete the project, from creating the game to delivering the final report.
